Default 993 Odometer stopped working

My odometer just stopped working, trip odometer too but the speedometer is working fine. Car has 36,000 original miles. What could be the issue ? Does the entire gauge need to be replaced ?

Its commonly that one or two gear wheels inside a broken.
You can send it to a specialist, which would cost you mostly 300 + USD od DIY which would cost you about USD 25 per gear wheel.
Its actually a pretty easy job, just needs a steady hand (best to achieve with a good glass of red wine). If you use the search function, its already often discussed and there is also somewhere the right DIY advice.

Default Odometer repair

I believe the odometer is gear-driven and the gears are nylon. When mine stopped working a few years ago, I removed it (easy DIY job) and sent it to North Hollywood Speedometer. It was repaired and returned in about 6 days.
See www.nhspeedometer.com for more details.

Hi,

Very High probability it's the gear and pod inside the speedometer. It's 50$ for both. Many says it's an easy DIY but some say you can easily break the speedometer.

Personnaly, I sent it to Specialty Gauge and Cory repaired mine for 85$, including cleaning and a new light and I works perfectly.

All too common, it's not even funny!! Mine crapped out this summer but is accelerated when the Trip is reset before the car comes to a complete stop!

Easy fix. To prevent it from happening again, avoid resetting it while in motion

Actually, that's kind of a myth. From the owner's manual; "The lower odometer records trip mileage, and can be reset to zero at any time by pressing the reset **** below." (Italics mine)

The culprit in this failure is degradation of the tiny plastic gears over time, not resetting when the car is in motion. The gears lose their plasticity, become brittle, and then the teeth break off during the reset action whether the car is rolling or stationary. Once you replace the gears with new ones, you should be able to reset the trip odo on the fly with no concern about breakage.

I did the DIY. Not only was it easy, it was rewarding.
