Default I Replaced odometer gear without removing speedometer needle and gauge plate.

Well, I experienced that usual broken odometer gear on my 993. I just reset the trip meter when stopped for gas and the odometer (both trip and cumulative odometer) stopped working.

I figured it was the gear in our speedometer/odometer gauge that broke a tooth, so I purchased the usual replace meant gear from odometergears.com. I received the gear in about 4 days in the regular mail and I proceeded with the DIY on Robin's P-car.com as put together by Brian Smith. (You can also find a link to this same DIY from odometergears.com when you purchase your replacement part from their website.)

I proceeded with the DIY, however, I did NOT remove the trip reset button top and I did NOT remove the speedometer needle that everyone worries could break if not removed with caution. I simply removed the circuit board from the back (4 screws) and removed the two screws that attach the motor. Then the motor simply slips out of the bottom hole and you can wedge the motor back enough to pull the two gears (pod and trip gear) off the motor shaft. The gears can be replaced fairly easily with the aid of a standard set of tweezers.

I can post pics (possible video) if anyone wants when I do my friends odometer in a few weeks.

Peace my Rennlist friends

Marc G.

Okay guys, I'll do it. I post a step-by-step on replacing the odometer gear on your 993 WITHOUT removing the needle and faceplate. I think my friend will drop his car off in a couple of weeks so I can take some video then.

Glad I could help fellow rennlisters fix our aging but superbly made 993's!

+1, I did mine the same way. Ends up there is really no need to remove the speedometer needle.

Perfect timing indeed. I've had the parts for a couple weeks, just waiting on some free time to do the job. Glad to hear there's possibly an easier way...

Okay guys. Like I said, my friend's car we will do probably in a couple of weeks (maybe March 10, 11) when he returns from his trip. I can take some snapshots and/or a video then.

But if anybody wants to do it sooner, try and read my directions above. If confused, just respond to this thread or send me a PM and I'll walk you through it.

I'm glad others can benefit from an easier way.

Well, I finally got a chance to do my friend's odometer gear fix DIY.

Here's the video:

Please tell me what you think. Sorry if my video is not the greatest edited video out there. But I condensed it down to 5 minutes so I tried to be concise but show all the necessary steps to disassemble. Assembly is pretty much self-explanatory knowing how to take it apart.

REALLY Nice job...........

I hope you remembered to autograph the back of the speedometer for posterity and what the mileage was when it broke))) I used a magic marker and advised car had 500 miles more than odo showed....
