A year ago I purchased 001. Ownership began with seeing the car for the first time at Watkins Glen and then spending the PCA race weekend getting to know the car and working thru the small problems we encountered because it had not been run for many years. And now here I am a year later, back at Watkins Glen for the PCA weekend with the car developed as far as possible for a 993 chassis and air cooled motor, fully rebuilt after the tub was stripped back to bare metal and repainted.
This for me was a once in a lifetime project, undertaken with passion and vigour to create a car I wanted to own and race for many, many years to come. Just thinking about the car and looking at it puts a huge grin on my face. I can't wait to drive it tomorrow.
The car has surpassed my expectations in every way. Having my partners in crime Jeff Stone and Jeff Gamroth with me here at Warkins Glen completes the experience. What they and their teams at Kelly Moss Motorsport and Rothsport Racing have achieved is outstanding. The craftsmanship and engineering with every aspect of the car are world class if not worlds best and I'm confident that will result in performance at a level not seen with a naturally aspirated, air cooled 993 before. I would like to thank everyone involved in this project and will do my best to live up to the car by racing it well for as many years as I can keep driving.
The rubber hits the road tomorrow. Last year very early in the development process I set a GT3R lap record with the car at Road America. We are using this weekend at Watkins Glen as a shake down given there are so many new systems and components. But once we get the car set up my target is to break Chris Musante's GT3R lap record at Watkins Glen and my own at Road America later in the year, having a lot of fun along the way.
