"But the seal is broader"
I wonder if this is the seal Bill V. quoted as being wider than the original? I believe that was never identified in this thread, post 17. Could it have been a 964 seal? https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...dshield+rubber
Is everyone happy with the safelite glass or is the OE Porsche glass worth the extra $500?
Is there a difference between the 'Pilkington' glass and 'OE' glass?
My insurance co is paying my installer roughly $750 for the job and he was able to get the Pilkington glass.
Auto Glass Express. I don't know if they are national.
The local installer website is autoglassmn.com.
I have no affiliation with them. My auto body shop uses one guy from this glass install company for all of their high end windshield installs.
The theory I read is that rain-x creates a surface that over time acts like cheese grater on your wipers on microscopic level.
Whether the theory is true or not i don't know, but I did experiment. When I bought brand new car I used rain-x. Because a lot of my driving is local, I need to use wipers in rain even with rain-x. My wipers became pretty crappy quickly. Later on due to crack, I had to replace the windshield and opted not to use rain-x. My new wipers are close to 2 years old and work perfectly. With rain-x they became crap after one fall season. No more rain-x for me.

I have heard that for simplicity, you can use the 964 glass and seal in place of the 993 glass and seal. Of course the seal will look a little different but the seal is also broader and should keep moisture out a little better..?
Has anyone here done this?
I have seen the 993 glass installed in an earlier car but not the other way around. The 993 glass was the first 911 glass glued in instead of held by the gasket. As such it acts as part of the structure of the car in a collision or rollover. Not a good idea to void this feature .
Also my research of the oem glass for my 993 indicates that Pilkington Germany is now the oem supplier. that said I am still waiting for the replacement glass to show up at my local glass shop. The dealer would have it here now but several hundred more expensive.
I have been looking everywhere for a better option than OEM. Safelite wont do it and only found one other place that was $1150 installed for aftermarket. I went ahead and ordered OE Porsche glass from the dealer. Ill let you know the actual brand as soon as it arrives. It was about $1150 with seals etc not installed. Im having a very highly recommended guy locally do the install. Im going to be there the whole time and already discussed this issue in depth and he is good with it. Crossing fingers.
I'm going to try and nail down the wider seal. The only issue with my recent replacement-and a problem on my original, was the gasket-it's like it needs to be 1-2mm wider. I'm going to drive down to my installer and see if he has any clue on gasket source. I bought the parts-they were all OEM, but Bill's gasket sure looks like what I need.
I'm interested in this possible wider seal. as well. I just had my windshield done as well and it looks great but a little extra rubber on the lower corners would be great. On my drivers side the edge of the seal wants to fold in to the channel sometime. Like Ed said 2mm more would be perfect.
Mine's pretty pitted. I'm hoping for a good rock chip, so I can get it done through insurance. Anyone know how easy the 996 windshield install is, as compared to a 993?
Over the years, I've had windshields installed in a number of cars. Always seems like a crap shoot. I had one where the car started rotting out at the window frame, due to a poor install.
As much as I love a new windshield, I'm always paranoid about getting a crappy install.
Bola Pryce is correct about insurance coverage here in Fl last time I needed a P-car windshield had dealer do it insurance made me pay the $115 they would not cover for OEM gasket kit felt it was good money spent did not want aftermarket gaskets on the car.
