I have washed my 1996 carrera 2 before at the track due to not securely tightening the oil refill cap.

1. Used Simple Green Degreaser.
2. Make sure engine is not hot or warm, since cold water on hot metals will damage it.
3. Follow directions of bottle for application.
4. Spray with water avoiding air intake and wires ending/electronics.
5. Wash the bottom and top of engine bay.
6. Drive car to air dry.

Good point, Ed. Fikse specified a 50/50 strength of simple green, for what it's worth.

So, I guess we can't drive in the rain now. Could hurt the engine.

I used Griot's Garage Engine Cleaner. Shielded the distributor cap area with aluminum foil, sealed off the air cleaner stack with doubled up cellophane and a rubber band, soaked everything with the engine cleaner, hosed off with plenty of water, dried with compressed air (blow gun), wiped up remaining moisture and mess with shop towels. Great final result!
