Default Snow and a 'vert

I am looking at a '96 C2 Cabriolet with 85K miles and in wonderful condition. Seller is insisting that the car go through a PPI(first time I've come across that).

Question I have is what members/posters think of the potential/wisdom of driving this kind of car year round especially seeing as I am living in Pittsburgh PA - so a fair good amount of snow.

All comments sought!!

It is a C4 cab though so doesn't match what I am looking at, but it is a great story nonetheless.

I would say get a 4WD beater. Not worth risking it in the snow/ice with that cab.

Not an option - we don't have the parking space for a third car. But that is a good point - I am not sure though whether you are referring damage from snow/ice or the risk of accident in the snow/ice with no hard protection.

With the right snow tires they can be just fine in the snow. Give me a call if I can help.

My C2S coupe, with dedicated winter wheels and tires, has been fine for 11 years in central NJ and, now, the Philly area. It will take more work to keep your car looking good but it will go in snow as long as it's not really deep.

A c2 cab with LSD and winter tires should be fine in Pgh. for the winter. You don't need a C4. Once the snow is higher than the car's clearance it doesn't matter what it is, C2 or C4, you're not going anywhere.

+1 . . could not agree more.

In Germany many so-called summer cars are simply outfitted with real (M/S) mud and snow rated tires and are driven year round. That's real snow tires and not some marketing concoction, All Season tire. Porsche AG conducts extensive winter tire tests every couple of years. The Dunlop M2 winter tire is top shelf, Conti's, Pirelli's to name a few of the speed rated winter tires.
I recently bought a 4 set of the Falken brand in our sizes using the tires mainly as rain tires throughout the summer. On both dry pavement and through heavy summer downpours over Vail pass at (+10,000') ,,, the Falken's we're great and moderately priced.

There are more than a few 993 owners here in Vail that drive their cars year round, we see them all the time.

I've read how people used their 993 in the winter. My daily driver sits out all winter and half the time, I can't even get the drivers door open because it's frozen shut. I can't see how the mechanical's for the automated rear spoiler would not become damaged when covered in snow and frozen.

Well said !
Just think of freezing rain, say a 1/4 inch of ice covering the entire body....Yikes!

I lived in Cleveland where my wife drove our 86' Carrera year round to work for years. Just mount 4 real snow tires on the car and you will be good to go, no problem!

Ive driven my SCs in the snow. The weight over the rear tires seems to help.
