Default I have a fan that looks like this...

So I have a new to me 993. I have noticed this before, but approaching my first DE, I am looking the car over I have a few things I think I need to take care of first.

Has anyone considered running with a fan that looks like this?

Yes those are cracks. Probably the two worst on the fan.

When I changed the belts as a precaution earlier this year the housing had the marks but the fan did not rub without the belts, that is what inspired me to paint the housing to indicate wear. The paint is now gone so the fan does rub, but it seems only slightly.

So I am thinking I should buy the fan and replace it myself. Any recommendations? I wanted to change plug wires as well. Seems like it would be good to do that at the same time. I just hope I can get it done in time for the DE on the 19th.

Don't buy a used fan. I believe a new fan from Porsche comes with the fan hub bearing as well.

You can get a non-OEM Bosch set for $268 on ebay. Or you can make your own for less.

The fan with bearing is ~$400, but the bearing is about 1/2 that cost by it self and fan can't be bought alone, so for the difference might as well do both at once. First, remove the whole thing and check the fan carefully. Those cracks could just be paint cracks, but...

And he can get some of that back by selling his old fan to Andreas for another clock project.

Still have the Sunset receipt laying here on my desk from a new fan purchase last week. $408.40 plus shipping. They had it in stock. FWIW - I pressed out my old bearing with 32K miles on it and sold it on Pelican for $65 to recoup some cost.

Thanks for all the replies. I tried to make an offer on ebay $410 no dice and the auction was removed. Ordered another for $469. They canceled as they did not have the item in hand. Finally I called Suncoast. I could not get as good a price. $479 + S&H. Are there discounts I am not aware of? $408 is a good price. At least I am confident I should get it before the DE.

Don't get used. Don't drive it, even, in my opinion. This happened to me: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...eferrerid=7241

$3000 later...

I'm afraid the OP mixed up Suncoast and Sunset. Rarely does anyone ever beat Sunset Porsche for 993 parts. It would have been $408 from Sunset as I just bought mine 10 days ago.
