Default Rear wheel studs removal... hub out or not?

Tried finding the info but couldn't...

Do you have to remove the hub in order to change the studs?

TIA!

Flying Finn,

Check out this thread, it may have your answer for you...See post #9 & 16

P.S. hopefully I edited my original response before you tried to double nut your studs...

Cheers,

I have changed a broken one at the track using a hammer, but I would not want to use a hammer without removing the hub for replacing all the studs. Remove the hub.

Otherwise no biggie but I thought you need to replace the bearing?
That would be no big deal either but since I only am changing one stud I was hoping to just do that...

For only one stud, use a 5# hammer and two good wacks. If you want to know whether the stud can be removed and a new one can be put in without removing the hub, the answer is yes.

Ok, i thought you were replacing them all too. If just one, no point in taking the hub out. And yes, you need new bearings if you take the hub out.

Maybe no harm, but I wouldn't hammer on a stud for fear of causing premature damage or flat spot on a bearing; but that's just me.

That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks guys.

I'll try first with air hammer/chisel as it's more gentle, then with a hammer. Never afraid of hitting a hammer in my car, IMO you can't call,a,car tour own until you hit it with a hammer...
(this isn't the first time)

Can they simply be pressed out with a wheel stud remover? Looks something like a tie rod end remover? No impact so no need to remove hub from the car. Could be a Harbor Freight item ?? $10 or so? What is this? http://www.harborfreight.com/12-driv...tor-69466.html http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...QEwAw&dur=4900

And you are correct. Improper handling and installation is a major cause of bearing failure due to my coworker who performed countless bearing failure investigations.
