The 993 C2 as a 993 RS - the general consensus
Hi all,
Given the obvious rarity and associated cost of a 993 RS, I have come across a few 993 C2's modified slightly made to look like a 993 RS (non-Clubsport).
1] Is this 'conversion' generally frowned upon by Porsche purists and Rennlist community? Or accepted?
2] What are the exact differences? The 3.8 block, thefront splitter, the side skirts, the rear spoiler, the 18" wheels, the roll-cage, seats/carpets/air-con/radio. Did it sit on different suspension? What else?
As we all like pics, here are two C2's I've come across that have 'become' the RS....

Thoughts?

If you like that look, go for it. Nothing wrong with how you modify your car. But just don't badge it as a rs. At least I wouldn't.

Very nice! Completely acceptable

Very desirable if done right, most are just cosmetic which turns me off.
To do it right you need to do engine, trans roof, aero, brakes, seats interior trim, suspension including - shocks, springs mounts, wheel carriers, bushes, sways, wheels, tires

How much does the 'Tequipment' RS Aerokit cost? I assume the genuine Porsche factory items are ultra-rare and expensive...
What is the most popular/reputed manufacturer or source for these parts? I guess I'm referring to the front splitter, side skirts and rear RS spoiler (wing). A ballpark figure would be good .
EDIT:
- One source, though no idea if they are genuine parts. Circa €3000 which equates to circa US$4000 plus paint, plus fitting (http://www.teile.pl/katalog/Porsche_...r_sills/20836/)
- Another, claiming genuine parts: Circa £2780 with VAT which equates to circa US$4,300 (http://www.type911shop.co.uk/shop/ar...6aid%3D3603%26)
This may just be a transatlantic-term, but what do you refer to by this?

trans, roof,
the normal 993 used a g50/20 or /21 transmission. the /20 in particular has poor gearing for performance minded drivers. Neither has the best internals for hard use, plastic bearing cages, relatively flimsy stamped shift forks , brass syncros etc. There are 5 performance oriented 993 trans g50/30, g50/31, g50/32, g50/33 and g50/34. All have better gearing and internals than the /20 or /21. But some are better than others, /31 is used in a base RS, /33 is the Swiss version w/ worse gearing, /32 was used in the RS/CS versions and has bothe better gears and better internals, /30 is used in the 993 Cup cars and is the base trans for 993 RSR w/ the best performance gearing and best internals, /34 is a /30 w/ an external cooler and optional gearing & cwp
virtually all normal 993 have a sunroof, few RS do, no RS/CS, Cup or RSR does

Aren't the brass synchros on the street car intended to provide long service life in on-the-road applications vs. the steel ones being stronger for intensive racing applications but increase wear on mated parts resulting in more servicing?
Are the standard gear ratios designed to provide optimized shift point during traffic driving with a tall 2nd gear vs. the racing ratios?

This is all just rinse and repeat from what we did 30 years ago in making '73 RS wannabes. Or 930 wannabes. Or, or, or. You've got your cosmetic tweaks that kept how many illegals in LA employed in fiberglass factories from the mid-'70s through today? (Though that business is a shadow of its former self.)
Bottom line is that the look v. performance requirements for an owner of any of these cars is under 100:1. I think the previous owner's cost on my car was maybe $3K on cosmetics v. $70K+ on mechanicals. Yeah, everything was done right, and I'll put it up against any faux RS where it matters. Even if the "think" around building it is a bit dated now.
And Bill, watch it with those typos around the word "trans". Could get you in trouble out in this part of the country........
