mobil 1 5 - 40 diesel truck is what I buy, but that choice is not my religion.
I'm sure other options work well too.
change the oil every 5K, run an oil analysis and buy something different as required.

Couldn't agree more. Even though this particular subject has been beaten to death, revived, and beaten again, it is still relevant. Maybe we should make a sticky for the "what oil should I use" conversation? Maybe also a sticky for top 10 993 related questions (like the plastic piece over the cooling fan etc)?

To the OP, perhaps start another thread with an introduction along with some details about you and your 993.........and of course some pics!

 

Sure, he has minimal posts, but he's been around for a year now. As they say, " just sayin' ".

 

Perhaps some suggestion of "try these search terms:" would be a decent approach. We need a sticky for 993 FAQ, really....links to (or search terms for) common questions, list of common issues with links (or search terms). Its not just the oil question, its engine trays, tires, fan shroud/duct, CEL, DME, etc...

I thought about trying to put one together, but finding some time to do it...

Well, here's how I see it:

With "cars like these" the owners tend to want to do something, anything technically proficient. Given that you can start with something like building a whole car from blueprints (my cousin and the 910/907 thing) at the pointy end, the inevitable oil/tire question is lurking there at the base of the pyramid.

I spent serious time with customers in the Olden Days on minutiae because what likely was more important long-term to their wallet--proper clutch adjustment, timing chain noises, changes in 1st gear engagement, etc--was talking waaaaaaaaaay over their heads.

 

I've used Brad Penn 20w50 in my 911 for most of the past 50k miles and in an E34 M5 I used to own. The 993 will get the same at the next oil change.

 

I've been using Mobil 1 V-Twin, but after a lot of searching and researching I will use Motul for the next oil change. Nothing ever seems definitive on this subject (it's difficult to get long term service histories combined with real wear measurements). It's balancing worry against pocketbook for me.

 

thats interesting that you'd make that switch as V-Twin has been highly recommended by a number of "experts" in the field. Motul has as well, but with its racing oil nature, it require shorter change intervals.

What was the reason for the switch?

 

Has anyone used the Mobil 1 5 - 50? I have not seen this oil in their product guide in the past. Late model Porsche cars come factory filled with Mobil 1 0 - 40 and Mobil recommends 0 - 40 for all Porsche both air and water cooled. But I don't know of a Porsche that uses 5 - 50 and why this is in their product guide. See arrows below:

 

My car has run Motul 300v 15w50 for most of its life (around 50k of its 62k). The engine is appart for a rebuild at the moment and when I opened it up the bearings were near perfect, the crank, cams etc looked brand new. When I sent the case to Ollies for machine work, they asked how old the engine was because it was so clean inside, they thought it was a 10k mile engine not a 62k engine.

 

And this is precisely why its my favorite.

 

Quad, it's primarily stories like this and Steve Weiner's previous recommendations that have caused me to change. Again, I think hard evidence is difficult to come by so this is more of a gut feeling thing for me. Lots of room for debate.
