Did this project this weekend and without question the best tool for this is a small hemostat. You can grab the little loop at the bottom of the clip and hold it when taking it on and off. I would also add a long screwdriver and a pillow to save your knees... Because I was trying different struts I had the opportunity to remove and replace clips/pins act no less than 6 times. By the end of this project I could remove and replace the whole thing in less than 5mins

Opening this thread back up... does anyone have recommendations for rear deck struts for a Turbo S wing? I'd assume that I could just just about any, and don't have to worry about the rear deck flying up, since the wing is so big and heavy.

The Cab struts seem to be stronger for some reason - but might cause your deck lid, even with the tail, to open way too quickly and possibly damage the hinges over the long term.

The standard strut part number is 911 512 331 01 with a 370N rating. That is the correct one for a standard rear engine lid.

The only other part number listed is for the Cabrio. 993 512 321 00. See if you can get the rating on that one. It should be more.

Look for the engine lid discussion in this thread.

I replaced mine and it only lasted a few years before went bad again. I also read others have the same experience, sorted of confirmed for me, so I stopped bothering with it. Is this still true?

Try ordering the heavy duty one (Stabilus 8722BX) and replacing 1 side only. Lifts right up and will not flip pancakes. I knew which side to replace by checking the length of the old ones compared to the new one. If its the same length, it still has some life. If its shorter, its shot and replace with the heavy duty one.

I purchased new struts for my 993 and my 912 from Pelican Parts. The 912 is very easy but the 993 just took a little patience but definitely a DIY project. Others have provided good tips already so I won’t repeat them.

good luck. RRC
