Default Going in for a windshield replacement....UPDATE!

So Im taking my car to Omaha for a windshield replacement. It has tons of pitting and a rock chip that was fixed but is still really annoying. I had the Omaha Porsche dealership coordinate the install with someone they have used to do all of their customers cars (they were doing a CGT last year). I am using OEM glass. I have a bunch of the "rope" to give them that was part of the squeaky windshield recall.

My question: what can I say/provide to the installer prior to the job to mitigate the risk of a disaster? I have the shop manual if that has specifications they might need. Basically, anyone with experience here, please let me know if I can do anything to ensure a smooth new windshield install.

Thanks!

What about a new OEM seal? You mentioned the OEM glass but not the seal.

Buy this one:

They need templates. Not a lot of places have the templates.

Hopefully they are just outsourcing it to safelite, just kidding! I
Wouldn't let those guys near my DD let alone my P-Car.

What's wrong with safelite? They replaced windshield in my Benz 2 times at my garage and did good job. I must say that replacing windshield on a Benz is a piece of cake, takes 30 min. 993 is probably a different story...

As long as they have experience with 993s you should be fine. It's interesting how some use and some don't need the rope.

Mine was done last summer and no squeak or issues - no rope used too. And I know plenty of locals here with same experience.

Ditto on the templates. Without them a small error of a couple of mm will result in a poorly fitting front trim seal.

They don't need the templates either....kind of remarkable, actually, how much drama is associated with a windshield replacement. I watched a guy do mine. The installer just needs to make sure he uses the right amount of urethane and positions the glass correctly in the aperture. My guy did it in no time without templates or rope and my glass is perfect, the seal sits perfectly, and there is no squeaking. I guess you just have to make sure the guy you use knows what he's doing.

Because they suck. Improperly installed windshield on a former DD rusted the window frame and caused interior leaks.

Personally I would not have an installer do my 993 without templates. They are used for a reason. I'm sure "eyeballing" it will get the installer close enough to proper spacing though

Thanks for all the advice (and for scaring the $hit out of me). Where would one find these templates?

Also, don't the seals come with the new windshield? I called the dealer and he indicated that was the case...

Lastly, the dealer is coordinating the work but it is a local glass installed that does all windshields for them. They says its the same guy that does all of the Porsches...Im not sure what more I can do but pray and watch his every step to make sure he doesn't F something up.

Kent,

You can contact the glass guy and find out if he has the templates.

If not, I would be glad to loan you the set I own. You can email me directly at m.capocefalo@aainy.com.

The inner and outer trim (seals) are separate purchase items.

I just had the windshield on mine replaced and it is squeaking like crazy...driving me nuts.

The installer offered to use the 996 "rope" to repair. Does this get the job done?
