Default Tach removel for light bulb replacement

The book 993 the essential companion. Says the bulbs are easy to replace but it does not explain how to remove gauge to access the back of it. Please advise Thanks

Just pull it out..you may need to pry, watch for damaging the edge, etc.

All the gauges on the dash are just friction fit.

Cheers,

Mike

This $5 tool from HarborFreight will be your friend. To be safe, wrap tape around it too.

If you use a screwdriver, you will kick yourself like I did when you gouge your gauge trim ring or the vinyl!

Some find it easier to remove the clock first, gives you leverage to push the tach from backside.

If your tach is the on-board computer type, you will need to remove the steering wheel/airbag to get it out.

Cheers,
Joe

The tricky part is wiggling it past the steering column. Be patient.

I took the opportunity to take all the gauges out to clean the rubber seals and lubricated them before re-installing. There is a hard yellow gooey material that was pretty ugly.

I have to do this on my car as well. I found a link post by Tore Bergville that he was able to remove the tachometer (his is one with the OBC) without taking out the steering wheel or the column covers. Her starts out by prying it out and then slips the rubber sleeve over and off the gauge. That apparently gave him enough room to then wriggle the gauge out past the steering wheel and column. I'm hoping to give this method a shot when I take my tachometer out. Here's a link to his web page, if you look under the link for On Board computer backlight repair he describes the procedure for taking out the gauge as well as a few pictures. http://www.porschehvac.bergvill.com/

Removal of the airbag/steering wheel is so easy I don't see the logic of trying to wedge the tach out and potentially break or scratch something. But that's just me.

Cheers,
Joe

Argh, the trim that holds the glass came off the tach..... It is held in place by a plastic piece (inside the tach).

Any solutions/sources for a replacement part (before getting super glue)

Just dont put the key into the ignition and turn it on so you can unlock and move the steering location. If you energize the dash lights while the airbag clock spring is disconnected you will need a Hammer, PIWIS, or PST2 diagnostics test device to reset the airbag light on the dash.
