Default i may not be the fastest..gonna be the cleanest

hi guys thought i strat a little blog in my journey to enter this car in the next PCA concourse. 4 weeks from today..1st week is the wheel wells today...

the car is fairly clean but i have to fight 17 years of road dirt and grim..the wheels + there was still the original factory cosmoline wich is now super caked on..

these are the things we do to get ready...1) is the initial cleaning of the wheel wells and strut assembly...we will still go back to them 1 week before the show.

before we started to clean we inspected brake lining thickness or any leak the suspentioin...passed..

we then proceeded to degreese the front arm pit of the car. (wheel well) .
this is the before shot

it took arpximately 1 hour 45 min to clean and we had to do the process about 5 times on the arm pit.

the lugs where are scratch up but were serviceble thus...spray paint time..

4th time around the red actually showed up...it was red in there!

the end result

thanks
Lemon

I plan on doing this soon. Please share anything you learn that you wish you knew going into it.

we found out that using the purple degreaser works well. the kind you get in pep boys. we stuck it in a plant sprayer you get in a lawn and garden section was a lot easier than squirting it . it was very touch..i dont think a pressure washer would have done it ..you just have to be patient to take off. layer upon caked on layer.

our next project will be the rear wheel well..ill try to be more detail on it.

I love the clean look and have thought about doing the same.

But...

Since the coating (cosmoline) is there to help protect against corrosion, do you ever worry that removing it will eventually lead to bigger problems?

Especially in the wheel wells where rocks will now have direct access to the painted surface and no longer have to get through the coating before reaching the paint.

jeff,

the original cosmoline was one even coat under the wheel wells.. but when we got to it, under the dirt and grime. it was like a map. only spots of it remained. you get a spot 3 inches wide the next one was 2 inches wide 4 inches away.. you had more exposed area than protected area. Wurth does sell a cosmoline product wich we carry..but for show it leaves a white undesirable coating....look the springs...spots of cosmoline..

Default The car is boulderbobo's

Lemon,

Those are some pictures I had on my hard drive of boulderbob's car (see four or five posts up), he could probably help answer your questions.

I was looking at your car as it was posted on the LA Auto Gallery website. I am glad it went to a good home, you are going to make it into a great 993!

By the way, I had purchased the passenger side mirror from you back a few months ago, it works great on the car shown in my avatar. An RS clone with no left hand side mirror.
