Angry Looking for the impossible 97 ECU?

Hey guys,

Figured I'd post in here since I'm having no luck. WTB 97 993 ECU Bosch number is 0 261 204 376. I've been calling all over the place trying to track one down. Steve W. you were right, this is going to take sometime.

Thanks

One option would be to use the 100% plug and play aftermarket ECU my friend makes. It will plug directly into your harness. Only thing you need then is to run a vacuum hose into the ECU from the engine bay or alternatively install a MAP sensor in the engine bay and run a cable to the ECU.

It is not 100% stock but better option than no ECU at all... Plus you will get the full adjustability with the ECU.

Thanks, I had been following your post back in 2012. Its a very good option if I can't find a 97 ECU.

Just wanted to be able to get one and ship it off to Steve W. as that is the most plug n play you can get.

Thanks again.

Sheepherder - don't know if you followed the thread but I sent my ECU to Steve for reprogramming (and to delete the immobilizer) - couldn't be happier.

OP has a 96...ECU is not programable. Thus the need for a 97 ECU...I think a 98 ECU will work as well but an expert needs to confirm.

'98 ECU (.649) is different and will result in a permanent Check Engine light (evaporative control issues).

You'll need the .376, '97 version.

Thanks Steve.

OP i was on the phone with Sunset Porsche about some parts and asked Andraya to look up the 97 ECU. She says they are in the system and our price is under $1500.

That's a pretty good price IMO from Sunset!

Excellent price. I would have thought they were NLA from a dealer. Salvage yards charge $1200. Hopefully I won't need to find out.

I bought a new ECU for my 97 from Sunset a couple years ago. It was about $1300, as I recall, and had to be shipped from Germany. It is unuseable as delivered. It must be programmed by the dealer or by Steve Weiner. There may be others who can do it but I am so happy with the 'features' Steve included he has my recommendation. The purchase and programming was not inexpensive but well worth it in my particular case.

Thanks everyone I called Sunset Porsche, Andraya was not there so I talked to Jesse. I don't have a Vin number that pointed to that Bosch number just my vin that ends in 008. He was able to look up by Bosch number .376 but it ranged from $1479 to $5000 Guess I need to find a Vin that has the .376 I really don't want to spend 5000 when I could of spend 1500.

If one searches, it can be found for $750 - $1000.

"'98 ECU (.649) is different and will result in a permanent Check Engine light (evaporative control issues)."

That's correct! But if one really could do a total re-flash and not a minor code change,
i.e. remove the immobilizer test, that wouldn't be an issue.

"It must be programmed by the dealer or by Steve Weiner."

That's GIAC (as most use) and it's about $1000 to the end customer,
i.e. Let's give credit where credit is do.

sheepherder, my invoice from sunset a couple years ago for a 97 ecu shows a part number of 993-618-604-10, give that a try when you call again.
in the same situation I called a bunch of porsche junkyards and shops and was quoted 1700 to 2500.
I was very surprised when sunset quoted 1445.
