Default Scantool not connecting to SRS/Airbag module

I have been reading quite a lot of threads about the scantool OBD issues, but have not figured it out yet. So hopefully somebody out here can help me

My 993 is an early one, build okt 1993, round connector. A year ago my mechanic cleared a 'soft' airbag light with a Bosch Hammer, so I know it is accessible.

No issues on the airbag this time, but recently I bought a T-OBD and used it in combination with the scantool software. I can access and read al modules except SRS/Airbag (and Tip, but it's a manual)

I tried different methods described on the various threads, such as switching the contact on and off and restarted the software several times, but no luck.

Any thoughts on this are appreciated

Best regards,

Marco

I have the Durametric scan system. Same issue on my 1996 993 Carrera - the 993 sotware setting won't read the airbag.
I set the software for the 964 and it reads the airbag right away. Maybe the early 993 has an earlier 964 airbag unit?

good call, that might be it

On 96 993s we have used the 1995 to get to the airbag and it has worked perfectly

Gentleman first of all thank you for the quick response,

When I read your posts, my thoughts were; 'yess, this is it...'.
So first thing, when the kids were off to school, was to set the software to 964. Unfortunately no luck

However when I looked into the software config files, I noticed that both the 993 and 964 are using the same values for the SRS Airbag: address 87 and baudRate9600 ???

Maybe the values are wrong? I have tried baudRate8800, but that does not connect the OBD to the SRS Airbag module.

Thanks again.

Best regards,

Marco

Only the 964 DME uses 8800 baud, the rest of the units use 4800 or 9600 as set in the config files.
I guess there's several versions of the air bag control module, later 993's were even fitted with a 996 type. However, Scantool was primarily made for use in the 964, and thus could have problems with some of the the 993 units due to unforeseen/unknown compatibility issues. This can be due to handshake/data transfer issues as well as baud rate/address. The latter can be manipulated by changing the file contents, but not the first.
I have seen some users getting things to work by starting the Scantool software before turning on the ignition, or even by switching the ignition off/on during initialization. I saw your note on trying this already Marco, so I am sorry I can't offer any more help.
Anyway, Rennlist is the place to be to get help on these things, so I am following this thread closely.
Cheers,
Tore

I'm having a similar scan / airbag issue on a late production MY98 993 having needlessly tripped an airbag fault when servicing the horn cradle thing.. Back in the day, the out going 993s were sharing the build line with the nue 996 car,,,, I watched this with me own two eyes.

I''ll try a few of these suggestions; 996 airbag module..

Thanks for the input Mike, I'll try to find a OBD suitable for the 996 and will post results in this thread. However, mine is an early 993. And I am pretty sure it still has the original airbag system

Best regards,

Marco

Btw I could not help to notice this is your 996th post

I do not know if this will help but I have same issues. A little history I was doing work on my front blower fans and needed to disconnect my crash sensors to gain access to fans. I accidentally switched ignition on to check some thing when the crash sensors where still disconnected big mistake as this course of action throws up a airbag light. I was not too worried as I assumed reconnect crash sensors and get car connected to Hammer or PST2 tester and clear airbag fault codes light will go out.

If only now my PST2 tester can not detect the airbag module ???? previously when I did scans on my car airbag module always got picked up this is very strange > ? I have removed fuse number 1 from the box but this is for the blowers. The PST2 will not pick up air bag module so how do I clear light>?

Strange indeed, I wonder why you cannot connect now, but were able to in the past?

Keep us posted. If you are able to solve this, maybe it is oneother piece of the puzzle

For the record, same software/system and it reads those on my 06/1995 model year.

Marco,

If a hammer once connected to your module, the scantool should also, given the proper settings in the cfg file.

One thing you might try is to disconnect the battery for a few moments and try again to connect.

On my workshop bench, I have a bosch hammer and o'scope connected to a C4 ABS/PDAS and if that module rec'vs a certain amount of invalid data, the hammer and it will disconnect. It will not reconnect if the proper address at the proper baudrate is sent again. Only after a total power cycle will the hammer reconnect to it.

Thank you mojorizing for your input

After I read your post, I got to my car and disconnected the batt. for a couple of minutes. After doing so, I tried but no luck

Not for the 993 nor the 964 (eventough it uses the same baudrate and adress).

I am thinking now that maybe its my adapter (OBDII---round connector). I did not buy it from Tore, I already bought this some time before that.

Best regards,

Marco

Marco,
I think I remember reading where a similar problem was resolved by removing the battery, wait a day to make sure capacitors have drained, and connect the pos and neg battery wires in your car together for abt 5 mins. This supposedly dumps errors and allows for reading and resets to defaults?

Hopefully someone else may remember this post; as it did resolve the issue.

Hello nine9six,

Thanks for your input.
Actually I also read this info in a thread somewere on Rennlist.
But at the moment I do not have an issue with an airbag light, my problem is that I cannot connect to the module using the scantool software in combination wih the T-OBD. It does read all the other stuff...

I checked my OBD2-19pin adapter the other day using a multimeter, with info from Tore about the pin connections. There were some differences wich I took care of. For instance;terminal 30 (+12V)was not connected and I shorted this with term. 15 , but still no joy

Anyway, for now I give up. If I do get a resetable airbag light in the future, first I will try nine9six's suggestion and if that doesn't work I'll just visit my specialist and pay him for a reset.

Thanks to everyone who joint in on this
