Replacing all 12 cost me just under $1000 but some people replace just the ticking ones as needed to spread that cost out.

So the car that I was looking at turned out to be not such a great value. I've now changed my gaze to one with only 35k miles and it costs only $5k more. I like the idea that it's farther away from needing valve guide, lifter, and clutch work. Plan to pick it up tomorrow...yes, I'll post pics

The 996 will not start if clutch is not depressed...

You could say the 993 is the last 911 with a true "Le Mans" start feature. Pretty pointless to have the key ignition on the outside if you still have to wait until you're pushing the clutch to start it. Next time you're about to race a 996+, insist on starting on foot across the street.
