The CDR220 is great especially in the AUX mode. The tuner does not compare in audio quality to the sound using auxiliary. I have compared the same FM station through IHeartRadio and the FM signal and the sound off my phone is better. Pandora, IPod, or an MP3 sound fantastic through the system. Just need a couple of bits and pieces from Becker to get the job done. About 40 bucks. The look of the CDR220 is perfection in the 993.

The vehicles VIN# is not actually needed, however the printed serial number of the radio is requred to source the CODE. If the serial number affix'ed to the radio's exterior is missing.... IIRC you can power up the radio and toggle btw 2 keys or something and the serial number will appear. Something along those lines.

I did the same thing (when I had a 993). I also put the four spoke steering wheel back in (albeit it was modified in Poland). Both were done to bring the car back to being more period correct. It is like putting 996 seats in a 993, it just doesn't look right to me. The great things about these cars is you can mod them the way you like them.

If it's missing the printed serial number, hopefully the procedure here will work as a last resort:

I just want to be able to listen to my ipod and stream XM via the iphone app.

The seller has a 14 day return policy regardless.

Give me the serial number and I'll get you the code.

I purchased a CR-220 for $35 a couple of years ago and added the aux/iPod interface. It cost me about $85 including a 4gb iPod mini. Very happy with the set up even though I rarely use it. Most of the time I listen to the exhaust sound - it's better than any stereo in these cars.

Randall: DO get the face plate "upgrade." It is literally (and figuratively) night-and-day.

Really? Maybe because I live in the city and local stations are pretty strong, but the tuner in my 220 is very good. I am also have a really nice amp and great speakers, but I have never found the tuner to be lacking. I thought typically Becker tuners were pretty good.

I plan on it. The faceplate upgrade and ipod cables are provided by Becker Autosound, right?

If so, They're located pretty close to me. I plan on seeing them for both.

Please let us know if Becker Autosound NJ continues to offer the contrasting faceplate for the CDR-220 radio.

I believe SW Stereo offers the face plate change.

I have recently had a bad experience at Becker - they are totally unresponsive to emails, screwed up shipping, and shipped cables that I asked them not to include. I now have the hassle to return cables AT MY EXPENSE. I do not want to deal with these guys again, they are not on my recommended list. I went to them because that seems to be the place to take it for the screen update.

There are other places like SW Stereo that do the change for cheaper ($50 vs $100) and hopefully less hassle.

Also, they are high priced on the cables - they want $105 or so for the iPod cable, but you can get if for just over half that price ($60) here:

Cheers,

Mike

So...I bought this about 5 months ago. It sat on the shelf for a few months. I finally hooked it up to get the serial number for it through the menus and sent the serial to Ilko. Ilko was nice enough to provide me with the code and today I finally got around to installing (or at least attempting to).

It turns out the CD player doesn't work. I'm pissed...I guess it's well outside the return period the seller was offering. I'm not much of ebayer, do I have any recourse?

No recourse through Ebay or pretty much any seller/company after 6 months. There are shops that can repair it including Becker but probably cost more than it is worth. I would get the ipod or Aux cable and hook up a MP3 or Pandora player and be done with it.
