First 993, transmission question
Hello,
I just picked up my first Porsche, a 95 911. During the drive home, I noticed that selecting 2nd gear on an upshift feels very "notchy" or clunky compared to all other gears. I have no issues when downshifting into second (even without a rev match), and the 1-2 upshift under heavy throttle seems fine. Its just the 1-2 shift under normal light acceleration that feels odd.
Is this typical with these cars and if not is there something I can do to narrow down the cause?
Thanks.

The 1st & 2nd gear synchros are a double ring design for durability. They clearly feel different from 3d on. Two distinct clicks in the shifting process. If you find you are consistently feeling a grind or have the feeling of a slip over a tooth or two once you have warmed things up then you may need new first and 2nd synchros replaced.
Otherwise you are good to go.
Also:
Don’t let a technician show you steel metal chips in your oil and sell you a rebuild. The chips are likely from gouges in the differential and are common on cars where aggressive driven was done and wheel slip can impact gouge a differential gear face. This issue is an inexpensive repair as the differential is easily rebuilt and many tranny shops have good used ones on hand from cars where they upgraded to limited slip units.

When I first got mine I had a similar feel as you have described. I changed out the gear oil and it went away. Not sure when the last time your car had the gear oil changed but you might consider doing it.

Thanks for the responses, I don't recall actually hearing a grind from the trans when this happens, more just a "pop" into second that I feel through the shifter. Hopefully just feeling the difference in syncro design. The 3-2 downshift is smooth so I presume from this the syncros are functioning ok?
The trans-fluid was changed 10000 miles ago by the previous owner, I may change it again when I do the engine oil just so I know whats in there.
I notice that once and awhile I have trouble getting the shifter over into the 1-2 gate from neutral, wonder if I've got some slop/binding in the shift mechanism? May be a good time for a short shifter and golden-rod over the winter.

I also changed the trans fluid just a couple of weeks ago on my 53k mile 993, I put the Mobil 1 Delvac in per others recommendations. While there's definitely still somewhat of a "clunk" feel, it helped the 1 - 2 shift out considerably, especially when cold.

It might be based on what you read on forums, but having just come back from a drive to warm up my engine and transmission lubes to change them prior to winter lay-away, my 1st to 2nd and all other shifts were silky smooth. I expected them to be a bit stiff with temperatures just above freezing.

How many synchros are there in our 6 speed manual transmission? One for each gear I assume?

I run Swepco 201 in both my p-cars. I've had great luck with that fluid. Related, I had 2nd gear grinding/notchy feeling for a few years. I pulled out the entire linkage and changed all the 25 year old bushings and cups. Completely solved my issues. YMMV
