man, you really like to get into semantics.

Not every person on this earth likes the 993's appearance. deal with it.

From what I've been seeing, the 964s are priced just under what the 993s are.
That would make them quite less bang for buck.
The 996 although fugly is a great bang for the buck right up until it explodes...
So, I would have to pass on the 964 as the money is about the same, and might buy a 996 if the price were right.
I would just have to cross my fingers and not look at it that much.

I would agree that the 993 is one of the best values out there wen it comes to balancing performance with build quality. 993's were of an era where over-engineering was still considered a viable design strategy, as opposed to the cost engineering that we see today. There are newer Porsche models that offer better performance but to me, they feel like throw-aways.

Matt777,,, I'm down with that! The 993 is a great sports car. Man,,, I lived through the 993 / 996 cusp days... In mid ’96 the soon to be neu MY98 H2o 911 car was largely still unknown, yeah some B2B folks knew a little, however the 4th qtr. ’97 996 production was really an unknown, even to the press guy’s. Hey 20/20 hindsight … is witnessed in every 911 model since the 996 as the new 911 models succeed in introducing the coveted 993 design language. The current 991 coupe is one such example.

My 993 .... I think I'll keep her.

After seeing the comments you post, thread after thread, I have one question: Do you even like 993s? Why constantly post that there are better? This is a 993 appreciation forum, isn't it? It almost seems like the juice for you is just trolling this site.

It is that. My thinking around the value of a 993 was brought on by the fact that I would have to pay more $$$ for an early 911 or 356 coupe. Forget about water cooled stuff. I have a 356 and I could see myself adding an early 911 but not replacing my 993 with it.

nope, not particularly. its fine for now
why constantly post that there are better? because there are, simple as that
if it does not pleaser you to hear realistic statements, placing me on your ignore list is not difficult.

I just wondered. Better is a subjective judgement. Seeing that there is no perfect automobile, car lovers seem to find one that speaks to them. That being said, Bugattis do nothing for me, but I would never feel the need to go up to a owner's door, over and over again, just to ring the bell and tell him the car he loves is an overweight antique.
Some people just like to focus on the negative, I guess.

actually, the 1997-2004 Boxster is THE best bang for the BUCK. But in terms of 911, yeah the 996 is the best bang for the buck with the 964 a close second. I think i rather a 964 over a boxster and 996...

Forgeting about bang for the buck, the 993 is the greatest 911 generation to date. 997 is coming close however.

Meh. This is easy.

Bang for buck isn't simply how much performance you get for your dollar, but the experience you get for your money. Therefore -

The 964 and the 993 are together the best bang for buck 911's you could buy.

They represent the epitome of development of an inimitable sportscar, and the feel/smell/nostalgia/character that they embody ended with the last 993.

Objectively, the 993 is the better performer, but subjectively some prefer the classic qualities (?flaws) of the 964.

You can currently purchase one for a fraction of what they cost new, but they are at bottom of their depreciation curve.

It's all good!
