Is the 993 the best bang for the buck or what?

As I tell the local crowd, you get more for your money in Oakland v. pretty much anywhere else in the Bay Area. Problem is, you're living in Oakland. An M96 engined 996 is Oakland.

The 993 is the best buy. For people to really understand, they need to sit in it and drive it down the street. You will hear the mechanical sounds, the car is pure machine. Even the sound of the door when you close it. I could open and close the car door all day long!

The 996 is certainly a good value considering the price. But if you're talking bang for buck, then no freaking way. Whatever one thinks of the 996, it is a huge departure in philosophy and execution.
The best bang-for-buck is arguably the 964, IMHO. It's not a popular model, the prices reflect it, but it is pure air-cooled-911-goodness like its successor and all its predecessors. Our 993s are perhaps the 2nd best if one must figure in price.

I guess we have to define what "bang" is - is it looks, performance, reliability, lack of depreciation, popularity, capital cost, alignment with historical Porsche "values", race history, even colours, or likely a mix. A purely financial point of view will produce a different choice than a car that shows the heritage of the 911 development. But, since this is a 993 forum, we can bias the mix so the 993 comes out on top. ![Stick Out Tongue](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
