Default Road trip - how to protect bumper, hood?

No pics yet...let me pick up my air cooled and I'll post the obligatory pics. Just sold my 997.2 C4S and am moving into a 96 C4. The car is 1,200 miles away and I'll be driving it home. What's the best way to protect the paint from road abuse? I don't have time to install a clear bra. Is masking tape too dorky? Will it help? Any other thoughts as to how to protect the bumper / hood paint from rock chip and bugs?

Short of having no protection, I would do the masking tape. You might can shop around and find a close color match. Where are you traveling to pick up your car? Good luck and we look forward to seeing it.

How about a temporary vinyl wrap like EZ Shield. I have seen it used at the track. Quick and easy.
It is like a low tack painter's tape but clear.

When I purchased my car a few months ago, i drove it back over 2000 miles. I had a black bra, which worked out great.

I haven't tried it... but how about spraying the front end with a can of plasti-dip.

I used this stuff last time I had my car on a trailer to protect form road rash and it worked quite well.

they make a spray you can use that just peels off (like plastidip but clear).

You can use blue tape if you must

or just drive it as is. You will get road chips as you go along, so you may as well start now.

If its just highway it should be no big deal on chips - unless you get into snow or ice and they sand the roads or you like to tailgate. I vote to just drive it, as Quad is saying, it's going to get chipped anyways...

Cheers,

Mike

I'd suggest masking tape, or the EZ sheild...

Plastidip is really abrasive, even though it peels of, there is a danger of it
ruining your paint. (As per the quite entertaining 996TT Plastidip thread on
VWVortex..)

The black pull over bra is a good way to get some coverage for your trip, and HIGHLY recommend clear bra when you have the time to do....do the ENTIRE hood, or your first chip will be 2" above where you stop the clear bra. I've used Roadwrap for AX/DE/TT, but be very sure to secure the corners of it with tape or at least get it VERY smooth. I had some of it lift and look like it was starting to scratch at the paint where it was flapping around a t the edge.

I bought a cheap Porsche name brand bra off Ebay ($75). See avatar. Worked great for a 4000 mile trip I made. If you go that route, mask under the fenders where the straps attach. PM me if you have questions.

I would do the blue painters tape if you're short on time. Maybe you can borrow someone's bra nearby. Where are you located?
