Was it really a 997 GT3RS?
Here's what happened to me yesterday eve. on the Autobahn in Germany.
On A6 towards Nuremberg, I let a obnoxious Audi A6 Avant 3.0 TDI pass as he was too close to my rear, followed by a late model Mustang convertible V8 who followed him as close as the Audi did to me.
There was moderate traffic ahead so the pace was around 90mph I guess. We reach a pack of cars and I can hear the sound of a super loud car. Even though I couldn't see it, I drive a convertible myself with semi loud fabspeed mufflers.
After some time I can make out a 997 with a hugh wing, little fender extensions and an air scoop on the rear hood, just under the rear window and chimney style twin muffler tips in the center.
At some point, the 997 takes off, I can hear him downshift and the road ahead was dead empty. I follow the Mustang who follows the Audi, who tries to follow the 997. He quickly dropped out of the draft, and to my surprise he pulled to the right, the Mustang and I pass him. I turn on my 55w HID's and give him a couple of flashes. I couldn't believe it but he also pulled to the right and get's right back in my draft but fell out of the draft too.
I was in 4th at around 90 mph and went almost to redline wot, shifted to 5th and cranked it out to around 6300 wot, shifted to 6th and and went to just under 6k wot when the 997 had to slow. I was maybe some 200 - 300 yeards away during the whole chase.
As I got close, I could see the emblem on the hood and it said 997 GT3RS. He slowed on the right lane to let me come close and we had eye contact. I gave him the thumbs up. He had a full rollcage install, harness seats, stickers on the side and the exposed tow hooks front and back.
His car was so loud, I couldn't even hear my own car while next him. He looked totally surprised as he saw a 993 gave chase. We continued on for some 15 min. with here and there decent left lane speed and I always waited for the moment when he would leave me standing. The exhaust was so loud, I could here every downshift and throttle body angle. During that time, I kept the gears and rpm just right to follow him at an instant.
How was I able to follow all the way to 6k in 6th? Is it the hugh wing that gave me the draft that I needed or was he just playing? From the sound of it, he was all out.
I always thought my car seems slow compared to the new Diesels and twin turbo cars but this puzzles me.
Thank you for your imput, or should I post this in the 997 section?

Ed,
All I can say is that you are living my dream. To be able to drive a 993 the way it was meant to be driven in its homeland is fantastic.
6K in 6th is really fast. Perhaps that was as fast as he wanted to go.
Enjoy.
Cheers,
Joe

Depends on the transmission. In a Euro-geared 993, that's 150 mph and still in the territory of contemporary Diesels.
I suspect he wasn't going flat out. Even a stock 997 Carrera should easily shake a 993 of its tail if going flat out.

Ive had a GT3 and none of my air cooled babies would have a hope in hell of keeping up with it. Acceleration and top speed are both quite a large distance apart. Maybe its so aggressively set up that pushing too hard on public roads is a bit twitchy. Saving his heavy foot for the track would be my guess.

My initial thought was that it's a clone RS but I know nothing about 997th.
I have a US model with the long 6th. It was clearly way over the governed 155mph limit that most German automakers hold to.
His car was pretty low to the ground but I didn't recognize any rear end hunting. I've been behind a rock hard 993 coupe before where I could see the rear end airborne at times.
So as a Porsche driver, who wouldn't floor it if you have an empty stretch of road in front of you and it's legal to do so?
I always go all out as long as I know the car is technically in 100% afaik.
It was a fun 5 minutes that probably won't happen like this again. I totally enjoyed it. I always have my contour cam installed but this time I left it home. Would have been great footage.

I would say he was just toying, all the GT3's are alot faster than our cars. And to be drafting you would need to be within a couple of car lengths of his, and at 140+ mph I would doubt you or he would be comfortable to have the cars that close together.
