Default '98 C4S - front differential replacment

Hey all,
I need to do a replacement of a shot front differential. New is pretty steep price . Anyone have a lead for used / reconditioned ? or just recommendation to put in new?

Thank you!

Look in the turbo section. Many of those guys do a 2wd mod so they have the old diff laying around.

Unless you REALLY require AWD, I'd use this as an opportunity to covert to 2WD. You might also try posting this thread in the 993TT forum.

What are the symptoms of a shot diff? Can you get it rebuilt? Don't GUARDS make a replacement?

you guys are all trying to nuke the AWD and then folks want the AWD - we need to setup a swap-a-thon!

I like having the AWD, but I drive my car in the rain, and with 400HP being applied, I really appreciate all four wheels helping out!

Cheers,

Mike

What were the symptoms?
BTW--having had the RWD, I too like the AWD for rainy Vancouver...

Hey all,
well i was driving about 80MPH on the highway and starting getting this fast (somewhere between a bang and a pop?) ha ha .. sound from the front.. pull over .. dont visually see any issues.. get going again .. sound is there increasing witht he speed of the car - so i know its diff or something on the wheel. i could tell it was front not rear. anyway limped a mile to a town and got a flat bed tow to a porsche indy shop in omaha NE - CARS . he says essentially - when we drained it there were metal chunks .. so thats not good.

i have a lead on a used part from LA Porsche auto dismantlers - any good / ugly stories on them ? price $2000 after core trade.

new was in the 5k range ? ouch.

$2k for a used diff from LAPD??? How soon do you need one? Search some more, you should be able to find one for well under half of that price!

how soon do i need one .. well .. i am not in a huge hurry - but currently my car is in a different state (rented a car to get home ) so i am i would say motivated to figure this out.

is the listing on pelican parts - posted by KM - the same as what is on the 98 4S ? i'll give that lead to the shop..

There are other dealers of used Porsche parts with far better reputations than LAPD. Search this forum for details.

David,

Rick here in Omaha. Sorry to hear about the front diff.
As others stated do check the turbo area as I've seen front diffs there from part outs and the occasional garage cleaning.

Let me know if I can help with anything.

The one listed on Pelican is a great price. I paid twice that for one from a 993TT with 20k miles on eBay.
