Default Mr. Coffee Perkolator - is my car supposed to sound like this?

So I've been noticing in the few weeks I've had my car that there is an audible perkolating sound emitting from what seems to be behind my right shoulder and to my right side.

At first I thought I was crazy (I am) but noted that I heard it mostly when the top was up.

Figured it out last night, being of sheer brilliance and genius that I am:

It's the sound of oil bubbling fore / aft inside the rocker on its way to the oil cooler.

I never noted such sound in 4yrs / 50k in my 930. Granted, that was er um uh 'sorta' a bit more - well - sonorous of a car 8-). Maybe the sound was there but was drown out in the peripheral awesomness that is a 930? 8-)

Or is this abnormal?

Oil level / temp / pressure are spot on, car runs fantabulously.

Bueller?

TIA!

Paul

I believe you are right that it is the oil returning to the oil tank. I was in a parking lot one night with the engine on and radio off and heard the same thing.

yep. its a feature!

At start-up and when the car is cold, you won't hear it, since the oil doesn't circulate to the front cooler until the car gets hot and the thermostat opens to put oil thru the front cooler. There are details somewhere on RL about exactly when that happens.

I heard this sound in my previous cab when I had all the rear carpeting and insulation taken out and installed LFW (probably unrelated, but...).

Being a cab, is your floor sound insulation still intact and in the car behind the front seats?

thanks guys!

I haven't pulled back the carpet yet to look but no reason to believe the sound deadening's been removed (car is stock and the PO wasn't a mod-type whatsoever).

But it's definitely audible!

I was going to say that it only seemed to do it when it got hot... which duh makes sense now that I think of why 8-).

Still quite odd to me that I can overtly hear it in a 993 but not whatsoever in my 930... any speculation as to why? Purely out of curiousity...

that is your passenger side seatbelt warmer, doing it's thing

seriously, those lines will keep that seatbelt warm
Not totally sure why your 930 would be different but the t-stat is different... as are the lines...

The passenger's side sound deadening tends to disappear in cabs for a reason that is both obvious and common - water.

Do a search, they say Mahle filters will reduce noise. I will ask for these at next fill to see if it makes a difference.

Paul F, as in Freidenberg(sp?)?

Damn, small world. And crazy how long ago that was huh? Time flies.

Sweet 996tt you've got there - don't roll it 8-).

It's funny, seems there's a handful of us former urS'ers now on 'here' - go figure.

The perkolation doesn't necessarily bother me, is more just a perplexing curiosity I guess. I kinda dig it in a way... "it's aliiive... it's aliiiiiive!":

Do 911 3.2's / 964's / 996's / etc. do this as well?

Again, it's a bit odd to me this is the first I've heard of it - you'd think you'd hear it referenced in a review or something, or that other models do it. Weird. My 930 definitely didn't, tho again... a bit loud in thar 8-)...

ya know Paul, by simply installing a set of Fister Stage ll or lll's...that noise will be no longer noticeable.

That's me! Left Philly back in 05, now in LA. And remember, I was a passenger in the M Coupe rollover! Innocent!

Love the 996tt- but lusting over a 964 or 993 as a 2nd toy. And by the way, my 996 makes no such noises.

Sorry for the thread hijack- I'll move this to PM...
