I owned a 1970 BMW 2002, loved that car! The "synchros" in the gearbox seemed problematic (Porsche design).

Good luck!

I love the 2002s, and def think you should buy one!

I've seized on the S54 M Coupe as my next purchase.

lopro, are you in the photograpy biz? The picture in front of the typesetter is so well timed (or staged?) and the one in front of the graffiti with the face looking in is cool... then, then there is your avatar.

Lately, I've been debating whether or not to keep my mint E34 535i ,5-sp ..... getting 'long in the tooth', as it is a '90.

This 2002 thread snaps things into perspective - indicating that I might at least take another 15 years to think about it

Looks like I'm pulling the trigger. Thanks for the links and tips guys.

I've never bought a car from far away before,...........so fingers and toes are crossed that it will be what I expect it to be. I'll keep you guys posted.

somewhat off-topic but still 2002-related...

Has anyone else thought that BMW blew it with the new 1 series ? When it came out, I was put off by it's "Bangled" styling and thought 'now, if they had done a 2002 retro-redo ala Mini Cooper and other well done retro designs, it could have been a stunning car. A 335i turbo motor on the 1 series platform with a modern interpretation of a smooth, clean 2002tii design would have been a home run in my opinion.'

Good thing they didn't do it, so I was never tempted ;-)

To us, the MINI is the answer to a modern-day 2002: Small, efficient design, economical yet fun to drive, never boring. But you have a point. The recent limited edition 1M (500 to the U.S.) was about as close as it gets.

Hence my other car being a Mini Cooper (2006 model before they ruined the styling), not an S, but tweaked with MTH software, Miltek exhaust manifold and TUV 200cell cat and Miltek cat-back exhaust, it's no S (never driven one, don't want to because I'd want the torque and horsepower) but it has the S suspension and 17" light O.Z wheels.

The BMW dealer when I bought it said that when people ask him what's the smallest most fun and fuel-efficient BMW, he says 'a Mini'......

I rode in a friends 135i that had tweaked the software and turbo equipment and it scoots.... While I like the idea of the 1 series M, I think it's a hideous vehicle visually, to each his own.....

Default BMW 2002

Same bud who is picking up new M5 as we speak with the 99+point '70 "roundie" also has 1 series 135i with "tweaks". Seriously quick, decent room for 2 front passengers but agree that styling is "off-putting" from almost every angle. Previous poster noting synchro issues is right on too.

Cool

The 1 series is a real nice package. Find a 1M and you will be amazed at the performance and overall driving experience. Back it down a notch with a 135 with Msport package and you have another great example.

The Bangle Butt criticism is old news and later analysis of design trends would conclude that Chris Bangle was a trend setter from which many designers followed.

I had a 87 M6 and loved it to death-black on black. Bullet proof! I would get a 2002 tii. More power and loads of fun! Look for rust and records and you should be fine!

Quite the opposite. I am really liking the 135 /w the performance kit, and is looking to buy one. Ugly but cool design...like a bulldog. 400hp out of the engine should be just about enough.
