993 vs 991 - A Visual Comparison.

strange how the 911 shape is evolving. I've seen a few of these out and about and the 991 looks better every time I see it. but then I like the panamera too.

FWIW - I think the 991 is the best looking 911 since the 993. With that said, I am glad to have a car that is "simple" in terms of limited driving aides, and unnecessary luxuries/distractions inside the car.

That said, however, the evolution of the 911 is one that I admire, especially as it pertains to performance (acceleration, braking, handling, etc.).

I think the 991 would look better if the front of the car wasn't so "busy." What with the horizontal bars across the cooling openings, the goofy LED "eyelids" above that (BTW: I saw factory LED strips on a Kia the other day which makes that kind of decoration officially passe') and the black splitter sticking out like a tongue on a squashed toad, there's too much distraction from the basic shape of the car, which is actually quite nice.

How surprising that a bunch of 993 aficionados prefer their car to the new 991. I have one of each and I see them parked next to each other at least twice a day. I agree that the 991 is not as lovely as a 993, no other Porsche is, but the 991's aggressive styling has grown on me, and there is no mistaking that it is a 911. Gone, and missed, is the wheel dancing around in my hands with each change in road surface. The base of the windshield is a baseball throw away, yielding a massive flat dashboard and greenhouse that eliminates the intimate feeling of the 993's simple interior. The quality of the 991's interior is really outstanding, at least in Carrera red, which requires some sort of leather upgrade. Of all the modern stuff, what I like most is the ventilated seat option. I would love to have such a button next to my bed for the sheets!
I have had a lifetime of rear engined cars. VW bugs in early sixtes, a
beat to crap 58 Normal coupe in college (and Ken is right, when the 911 came out I cringed...what are they thinking?) a Corvair Corsa 140 (the most sadly under rated car in history) and 8 911's. In every one of those cars you knew you were driving a rear engined car. One developed the necessary skills or you paid the price. There was real pride in semi-mastering those cars. The 991 is different. There is
none of the sweaty palms when pushing a bit on an unfamiliar country road. I'm sure one can still get "caught out", but it is a much
more relaxing car to drive fast. I'm not a track guy so I can't address that other than to say I'll bet Porsche made damn sure the new car is faster than the old car.
I going to try to make a Porsche point with a Jaguar analogy. The new Jaguar XKR is fabulous car, but no one with a Series 1 E-Type roadster should (or would) consider selling their car to get one. The 991 is just the latest greatest and they will build as many as they can sell. The 993, on the other hand,........well, you all know what the 993 is. I'm not thinking of selling mine......Cheers Chris

Great shots and I love reading the comments above. I agree- the size of the 993 is what gives it the sporting look, and in my opinion, the feel as well. I think the 991 is an improvement over the 997 but the shots above look like a scene from a Rick Moranis movie (ie "Honey, I blew up the Porsche").
