That is the other option which I will employ when I install a new pad. To make it blend in, I will place some black heat shrink over the strip of metal.
I helped with the installation of an engine pad earlier this year and the pad fit snugly in place with only the numerous plastic nuts holding it in place. A bit of glue could be used along the top edge.
