Default Engine Compartment Pad - Sound Absorber

Has anyone installed an OEM Porsche sound absorber pad recently?

If so, are they still made the same way as the original pad - thick closed cell (I hope) foam with a hard rubber/plastic layer that faces the engine side?

Is the OEM Porsche pad a peel and stick type of arrangement?

I don't want to hijack, but what are the best other options? Advantages/disadvantages?

Alex I went with OEM when I did mine. Some say there is an aftermarket supplier that has a better quality than OEM (appbiz possibly). Mine is fine after 3.5 years. Is your motor out of the car?

I helped install an aftermarket engine pad yesterday.

The quality of the fit was first rate and all we had to do is punch out the numerous holes (about 14) in the pad for the studs that stick out of the body panel in the engine compartment; the black plastic "push buttons" that hold the pad on press/screw onto those studs.

Construction of the aftermarket pad from the engine side to the firewall is ~3/8" black foam (closed cell, I hope), followed by ~3/8" felt material with a thin layer of aluminium foil bonded to it. What concerns me is the edge of the felt material absorbing water during car/engine washes. Other than that, installed, it looked first rate.

I think the purpose of the pad is more for sound absorption than for heat protection...just my guess.

Other material I have seen used on one of my motorcycles and also in aircraft is 1/8" thick sheet similar to heat/flame resistant asbestos-like padding with heavy duty aluminium foil bonded to both sides. That was more for heat purposes.

I'm curious if all the holes were punched out of the OEM pad, even the small ones for the studs sticking out of the engine compartment body tin.

No, but it will be next winter or the one after that. That is when the cam chain cover seals will be replaced along with main seals, even though they are fine at present. I have to spread out all this mental therapy, otherwise known as wrenching, over time.

No the holes were not punched out. There were cutouts for the decklid hinges. The OEM is just the closed cell foam with coating that feels rubberized that faces the motor. The OEM has no foil backing.

It is as if someone ironed the sponge from one side and the corners.
When new, the layer is very soft, rubbery type, but if you pinch it and pull it comes with your fingers. It is more like a thin skin, very elastic and soft.

No, you have to spray 3M adhesive, on the pad outside of the car.

No holes at all. You spray the glue, insert the pad in the car, align and stick in place. Then you with your thumb and index. push pad on each stud, and hole is pinched by doing this.

ps. If you park car outside, the soft rubbery trim above the ISV will be hard and crack in a couple of years. When I installed mine, I rubbed this edge with white silicone grease.

Do you have a link to a website for that product?

What are the construction details...what is the pad made of?

Here are some pics of the pad that Alex and I put into my car. It is the ESPULT D model.
We started with making the holes for the top ones first to ensure that the final result would be even to the ledge when we were finished.
Then we worked our way down the back punching holes and using the round caps to keep the top in place.
We then removed the caps and sprayed the glue down the back. Let it dry for five minuites then pressed it back into place.
I painted it black before attaching it to make the felt more waterproof and give it a consistant colour.
I would recommend cutting out the rectangular hinge cutouts completely as well as a one inch circle where the large wire harnesses go through at the bottom of each side. They just have an X cut in the material.
Its a good idea to have an extra few round caps available to hold the material in place and count the holes you will need to punch because its easy to hide a few studs under the material.
Thanks for the help Alex it sure turned out great

Falcondrivr not to double H-Jack, but your front bumper is spot on. Where did you get it?

Thanks,

I just ordered the ultimate pad from Appbiz for $129. Its not listed on their website but if you give them a call or email them, you can get it. It has the foil backing but appears factory from the other side.
