Yes .. 1972 till July .. then gone. It was a design feature first on the 911R and ST factory lightweight race cars to facilitate quick oil top/ups on the track. I owned a '72 911E and having the oil filler right there was awesome .. but there were enough owner/gas station screw ups and lawsuits to warrant moving it out of sight into the engine compartment and there it stays ..

^^^ what I remember is the release **** was in the passenger side rear door jam like a mirror opposite of the engine lid release .. same indentation, same **** .. so IF a gas station attendant made a mistake, it was usually the owner that told him where the release was .. so it was a team cluster f***. I should also mention the HUGE 'OIL ONLY' sign in red and the big red circle/cross going through a fuel nozzel right below it that covered the inside of that lid .. you would have to be Mr. Magoo to miss it.
I also remember that almost ALL bent front hoods on 356 cars were done by gas station attendants that didn't understand you had to lift the open hood up to release the 'catch' before you could close it .. ask me how I know.

No, well maybe at one time but not now.
I did a triple-take.
Covers were off.
No, different car.
Too, true!
I don't want to spoil the story on this one, it will be well worth the read when the issue comes out. All 959's are amazing, right? And then this one is really something else.

That was me who snapped that photo in front of the wrigley building by the bridge.

Odd circumstance. I saw it yesterday at the Frankfurt Klassikstadt. Didn't have a pricetag on it. I was going to post it since you Americans don't get to see them all that often (how many are stateside, about a handful?).
