Smile Aero Kit 1 and 1B

I am talking to PCA about the status of the optional 993 Aero Kit and 1B (The 1B has the LED brake lights on the trailing edge of the wing).

I am telling them this was an option available in the US...they are not so sure. They have pics of the Turbo S wing as fitted to the 993 S car.

Reason, I want to run in PCA Stock class and I will not remove the wing. If they don't like it, I will take my marbles and play elsewhere.

Maybe I just need to call Sunset and get it clarified.

Send me your e-mail address in a PM, I have a TSB about the aerokits

it says that 'they are approved for installation', I don't know if that makes them an option or not

Too funny. Because, you know, there are so many 993s out there populating stock class in PCA Club Racing.

(Will there now be a nasty post from the Club Racing Chariman, again calling me a troll?)

My car when delivered new was already with the 1B wing. But not sure if the factory installed it or the dealer in Taiwan.

I have a letter from PCA club racing indicating that wing is okay. If I don't still have it, I gave it to Nader when he bought my car. Anyway, it has been ruled legal.

These kits come as accessories to the 993.
If you look at the Porsche Tequipment Brochures/Booklets these kits are available from the factory or fitted by the dealer.
There is Aero Ki I, II and Turbo Aero Kit.

If you want a copy of the pages out of the book PM me your email address

Yup, John H. and at least one other 993 racer had been running legal Aerokit wings as in-class G cars for many years. This should be a non-issue with PCA at this point.

BTW Pelican Parts lists the kit for about $5,000...ouch! You can but aftermarket of 1/5th of the price.

Default 911 Pervy et al PCA Club Racing Rules (Long)

In my efforts to further buttress my case that a Techequipment wing should be legal in PCA Stock Racing, here is what I sent Walt Fricke PCA National Technical and Rules Chair yesterday in BLUE, and his response below RED. In essence, you can use a Tecquipment wing, but only if it is an original wing, and NOT a reproduction...but maybe there is an opening. He writes, it appears the use of a non-original Tecequipment wing is legal, "in the Stock classes only in the case of repair of a Porsche part with a functionally identical aftermarket part." I will be writing Walt one more time and letting him know that I did have an original wing but it was stolen. I had to replace it with an aftermarket wing. An no, I did not initiate a police report; the car has no theft insurance; its a track car....nawwww, screw them, I am just going to show up as a PCA Stock car and let's see if they can figure it out...if needed I'll whip out the stolen story, maybe I'll run this by Walt....maybe he'll read this post and DQ me for life!

Walt,

In front of me is the July 1997 PCNA Genuine Parts Price List, Porsche Document # PNA DLR 007 97

On page A16, you will seeNew Car Option Y01, Aero Kit 1, Part # 000 044 800 29. It was offered on:
• 1995-on Carrera/C4 Coupes
• 1995-on Cabrios
The kit included:
• front and REAR spoiler
I hope this info helps in the decision process.

Please understand that a) for better or worse PCA Club Racing has accepted that Tecquipment Porsche parts are Porsche parts, and thus can be used on the models for which they are or were offered, absent something specific which would alter this (an example would be the Tecquipment roll bars, which are not acceptable in PCA Club Racing).

And b) that the various 993 Aerokits fall under this rubric of Porsche parts options for 993s..

However, you are not asking to use one of these Porsche parts. Rather, you are asking to be allowed to substitute an aftermarket copy.

Short of a change to the Club Race Rules, this can be done in the Stock classes only in the case of repair of a Porsche part with a functionally identical aftermarket part. But that is not the case here, so that allowance does not apply..

I cannot find anything in the list of allowed Stock modifications which would allow use of this aftermarket wing. A wing is not a spoiler, and there is no mention of any allowable wing modifications/use of aftermarket wings to be found in the Stock rules. Thus, only the actual wings which could have been ordered or purchased from Porsche for use on the 993 can be used. Aftermarket wings do not fit this definition.

You told me that you purchased this aftermarket wing from a Porsche dealer. I would not have thought a dealer would sell aftermarket reproductions, but that is beside the point - it is the fact that it is not a genuine Porsche part which matters, not where it was purchased. As we both now know, the Porsche Aerokit wing assembly has a Porsche part number on it. And yours does not.

As you must know, it is not uncommon for track enthusiasts to purchase desireable parts, only to find at some later date that they do not fit under one or another set of racing rules. While safety rules are substantially similar across all racing venues, and seldom does one venue require what another prohibits as far as safety gear is concerned, the same is not true when it comes to car classifications.. Most venues will have a place for most cars to race, but because of the effects of modifications they may no longer be optimized for the class.

Regretfully
