Default Rack of Ages

Rennlisters:

So I have had the 993 for 3 weeks now and have put 1600 miles on it. My trip out west got cancelled because of family health issues. In the meantime, I have started to address some little issues with it so far. First order of business was to fix the noisy spoiler gear drive. It turns out that the bearing inside the gear mechanism was shredded and the plastic case for the gear drive was cracked or broken at all three mounting points. I found a used one at LA Dismantlers and installed it. Fixed it and now it is quiet.

Next a window switch failed. Plug and play and it is fixed. I took off the under trays to get a better look at some of my oil weeping issues. Cam Chain Cover Gaskets need to be replaced. Big job which I think I will tackle this winter along with the valve cover gaskets, plug change, etc.

I also have looked into the Fister Stage II mufflers. I have to buy some new bolts and straps and then I will do that.

The most recent thing I did was buy the Thule Hi Rise Rain Gutter Clamps so I can mount bars and a basket on top and haul my hockey gear. I modified two of the Hi Rise clamps. I read about it here on Rennlist.

Here are some pics for any of you who might want to do it. Although I suspect it is old news to many of you.
Hi Rise Clamp Mod

Thanks for all the good info so far.

Hey Michael

Sorry to hear the road trip was cancelled but good to hear you jumped straight into getting the 993 sorted! Love the roofrack, there is something cool about seeing such an icon looking so utilitarian. Is the roofrack for your hockey gear or for the whole team to sit on?

Nice rack. Don't fix everything all at once. You'll be bored with nothing to do over the Chicago winter

Looks great! The round bars make mounting accesories to it much easier, since the rear mounts are angled back...the older style rectangular bars end up on an angle also.

Be careful of those load bars sticking out so much, that's got bell ringer written all over it.

Nice mod. Just makes these beautiful cars that much more practical.

When I am alone it is ok, but with my teammate(a goalie) and his brother, there is zero room. The car does look ridiculous though with the goalie pads on top of the two bags up in the basket. I don't care just as long as I don't forget about the stuff up there and try to drive into my garage without unloading first. Yes, I have done that.

That's great to see. Several years ago when I was doing some track events with my 993, I used a roof rack to schlep my track wheels/tires. Strapped four wheels and tires to the rack. Got lots of goofy looks.

I'm sorry I didn't take a picture of my car with the rack and tires mounted on it. I don't think Thule offered the hi-rise gutter clamps that Michael has used when I bought my rack.
