Default engine under tray

I recall a couple years ago, we had a big discussion on whether or not to remove the engine undertray, pros and cons. There was a guy in Canada that was going to do some cylinder head temps once summer arrived (last summer). Any news on the tests?

I can guess who the Canadian who was going to test was....

I'd remove it; most have. In my brain, the aero aspect, and being part of the equation of US standard base noise reduction are the only reasons to have it on. Since I don't drive on the autobahn, and the noise doesn't bother me, mine is off and safely stored away.

If I had it on, I wouldn't get to listen to the metalic scrapping on the ground every time the orange hoses on the heat exchangers self-destructs....

The only controversies with respect to the tray are:

1. Does it result in higher engine temps?

Common sense answer: Probably at idle, and negligibly when moving.

2. Is there an aero advantage with the tray?

Common sense answer: Probably a small one!

Therefore:

Benefits of the tray -

1. Lower noise
2. Protects engine from beneath
3. Slight aero advantage
4. Concours

Disadvantages of the tray -

1. Lower noise
2. Higher idling temps, temps prob no different when moving
3. Conceals leaks

Most folk remove the tray.

Some folk remove it in summer and replace it in winter.

Few folk keep it on permanently.

Maybe Darin's son can feature an undertray in his next FDM video... (just a thought)
