Default A First

So, after more than eight years of ownership, I finally manned up and changed the oil myself today (on the hottest day of the year, as it turns out). Robin Sun's legacy lives on, as the write-up on p-car.com was perfect for the task.

I only have one comment. Whose idea of a sick f****** joke is the placement of the small oil filter? What a messy pain it is to get that thing out.

Still, I'm satisfied I added some points to my Man Card account today.

Do it a few more times and it will be a piece of cake - congratulations.

Whose idea of a sick joke f**** joke...993Dave
Dave, it was the same guy who designed the oil filter system on the BMW R100RS/RT motorcycles.

And, hey, congratulations.

For sure. Do the plugs, then see how you feel about changing that oil filter.

I, too, changed the oil this weekend for the first time -- on the c4s. Had done a few on the cab before. As others have said, it gets easier, especially that little filter.

I thought about changing the voltage regulator also, but it seems to be a several hour job and I did not have the time.

Next, I toyed with changing the fuel filter, but on p-carworkshop, it said it took him 3.5 hours. Passed also.

Seemingly simple jobs on these things take a bit of time.

I don't see what the beef is with the small filter.

You remove a duct hose and its basically staring you in the face. Sure you have to contort around the cradle a bit, but its hardly a big deal.

+1 - A little oil dripping down your arm is nothing compared to the many hours of pleasure extracting 12 hidden plugs from the bowels of a 993 engine.

Seems excessive. I did this on a varioram car this weekend and it took me 30 minutes and I was taking my time. A non-varioram car will be even easier.

Cheers,
Joe

Yeah, I will have to fix that - it does not take that long to change out. The trick is sometimes the connectors on the filter are really tight, and the position is awkward. I use a good set of flare wrenches, and it usually goes well, but sometimes its a really pain. One of most "unfavorite" jobs for sure - I LOVE the smell of gasoline in such as small compartment... lol!

Cheers

After doing mine for the first time I thought the same thing. I don't think I would even try the plugs. A little out of my comfort zone.

Hmmm, I'll have to dive in soon, then. Can't wait to smell the gasoline....
