Default stripped hex bolt help to extract

'95 993
I am working on pulling the steering rack to reseal; one of the four hex bolts is stripped. They were all lock-tite blue, 3 came out normally with standard length ratchet, however, one is stripped. Short of drilling out the bolt head, dropping the rack and then using a bolt extractor...any other suggestions? I WD-40 them all before attempting...using a quality 6 mm hex socket. I tried an allen wrench with cheater bar but no luck...tried hammering as I turned...aahhh!

thanks

Haven't been at those bolts lately so just a few ideas off the top.

Locking vise grip on the head.
cut a notch in the head and use a large screw driver
try to create the next size larger or standard size allen
heat directly to the head before any of the above
hammer harder (with and without heat)

GL with it.....hate those damn soft allens Porsche uses all over these cars!

tried the hammer, don't like heat as there is power steering fluid everywhere, it is on too tight to cut a groove to use flat-head or pounding on it...too flush for vise grips. ( Hanson 53228 Hex Head Multi Spline Extractor Set ) would be great but none stocked locally that I can find...Denver....thanks. also tried next size up allen and torx but no luck with grip...

Any chance you can angle a narrow chisel in, cut into the head of the hex bolt and break it loose? If you can't find one narrow enough, buy a cheap one and grind it down.

Try soaking it with something other than WD-40, it's basically scented water compared to Kroil, etc..

You don't have a welder at your disposal, or know someone with a smaller portable-ish rig do you? Before destroying what's left of the head, I'd want to tack a nut on top of it to try and twist it out with. The heat from welding might help free it up as well.

Get one of these. Get a high quality a 6mm allen head or something slightly bigger. Then use this to whack it.

The downward force of the whack translate to a shock motion to the left.

use a carbide dremel disc cutter to cut a notch across it and remove with screwdriver, another trick is j/b weld an allen or Torx tip socket into it, some times just the Torx tip has enough bite to get it, wait 24 hours and use a rachet or impact driver to remove ,last ditch effort if cutting is not possible. Hope this helps.

I used to have this problem, too. Finally bought some wire and 220V male & female plugs, and fabbed my own extension cord.

Drill or grind the head off! Then, the rack retaining cap will slide off .... exposing ~25mm of bolt: easy to remove once the pressure is released, and no loss, as the bolt is already toast.

This is what you need; http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?...llow&cId=PDIO1

They are available in different sizes, and I have never had one break.
