Now that we're kind of going off the rails, is the point of the original poll to point out what you can get for $50-60K? Really nice 996 Turbo, or slightly newer 997.

If we're jumping straight to "what modern Porsche would you dump what a liveable house costs in most of the country on"............well, for me no car that's not historically significant and/or offers "something" on track that justifies the extra cost, is worth into six figures.

I voted for the 997 carrera C2 / S but I would rather a 997 gt3 rs 4.0 or CUPCAR

This thread now completely reminds me of law school. Question asked on a test. We submit our replies. Later, outraged classmates wonders why s/he got a "C." Comparison to an "A" paper ensues. Outraged classmate is even more bent out of shape. Professor says that while what was written by the "C" student might be Law Review worthy, s/he didn't answer the question presented..........

I have another...

Back in naval architecture school, one of the questions (loosely translated) in a test was: "explain what you know about has welding?"

Buddy of mine answered: "everything".

Got full points on that one!

Always? I suppose it's relative. Done well personally with some of no-brainer stuff, and concentrating on customer value/satisfaction. Like a couple of Porsche shops. (But pretty glad I'm not in that business in today's world.)

Still the question has been answered by each of us. In fact one of the two given choices didn't answer the posted question. After all, a 996 is hardly modern. (And yes, that makes our cars ancient )

Of those two choices, I went with the TT; I considered one before getting my 993.

My choice (given no constraints to model) for a modern 911 would be a Singer 911.

So far I'm surprised by the answers. So, a re-bodied 996 (997.1) is better than a 996 Turbo? I thought we an educated forum?

I voted 996TT. If I had to change to a more modern 911, might as well be the oh-my-god-its-fast model with the good engine. 997 nice but, like a few said, M96/M97 motor doesn't give me that tough as nails feeling. Hopefully the post 2009 engines will renew this feeling but its a little early yet.

For the record, I like the way the "proper" 996s look (Turbo, GT3, GT2). Something about the goodness of the inner machine making the rest of the package shine.
