Yet another post on catastrophic failure. Cliffnotes: guy buys an 04 C4S with under 40K miles and within 24 hours the motor decides to have a meltdown.

This basic engine design lived in Boxsters and normally aspirated, non-GT model 911s from 1996-mid 2008. Gen I 997s included. Yes there were significant upgrades/changes/fixes made along the way. Yet it still happens. Having a replacement motor installed by Porsche doesn't mean it won't happen again. That "it could happen again" feeling is the thing that bothered me most about my 996 (an 02 model with a fresh, Porsche supplied and installed motor not long before I bought it with 27000ish miles). I just couldn't relax with the car knowing the costs involved with this happening. Fundamental design flaw comes to mind.

Yes, air-cooled 911s have their problems too but complete failure in such low mile examples is not one of them. The M96/M97 motors have and will continue to damage Porsche's reputation for years to come. Truly disappointing.

Rant over.
Now the 996 TT is exempt from these issues, very reliable from what I've been reading.

I had a chance to drive a modified 996 TT today for the first time, I actually had a pre-conceived idea it would be so smooth, numb and provide little driver communication. This turned out to be totally wrong and i was actually very impressed. Power and torque there is no discussion needed, we all know the answer to that....

It far exceeded the driving experience in a 997 C2S.

So when upgraded correctly 996 TT can be a whole different car. I'd take the 996TT now after driving one vs 997.

For me, if the Metzger engine is not there it is not even a Porsche.

So, for me, the only late Porsche possibility is now an impossibility... a GT3 RS 4.0

The Metzger engine is in the 996 Turbo, GT2, and GT3, 997 Turbo, GT2, and all versions of the 997 GT3.

But has seen its last iteration in the GT3 RS 4.0.

From 2 liters in 1965 as a 2 cam, 2 valve, air-cooled engine to 4 liters as a 4 cam, 4 valve, water cooled engine - one long ride for basically the same crankcase!! Multiple Le Mans wins in the 935,936,956,962 and GT1, a hard act to beat. Not to mention every form of 911 racing over the years.

I wonder if the new A91 engine will show such character in its future. The last 997 Turbos used the A91 engine as a basis.

We will see.

I'm with Knight: Cayman R. But if you're really restricting my choice, 997 S.

Cayman S.
I've driven the R and to be honest the seats get tiring after a while due to lack of adjustment. With only 10 less HP, I'll the the S and enjoy the ride a little more.
