Gateway drug
This is probably a repost but a recent comment I made on this board had me digging for this old pic.
An oldie but a goodie and personally very true.

I guess that is why we have "Addict" under our screen names.

Having owned 2 Audis, I can attest to their "gateway drug" status. Audi was my first intro to fine German engineered vehicles, so it forever reset my expectations for what a car should be (build quality, design, performance, SOUL, etc.) As a result, I compare all other cars to the German stuff and nothing stacks up (American, Japanese, etc.) except for the Italian stuff possibly, but of course I'll never be well-heeled enough to own a Ferrari I suspect. So, once I hit the reset button on what a car should be after owning an Audi, a Porsche seemed like the next natural step. As a matter of fact, as I was reading the owner's manual for my 993, I was laughing at how similar it was to the one for my A6 4.2 - it was comforting actually.

OK now...that's a sweet Allroad!
For me, I had 911's before my first Audi. Being a rally fan got me into the Quattro's. My longest Audi relationship was with a 90 Coupe Quattro-13 years, and 276K miles. That thing was ice raced, autocrossed, club rallyed, and DE'd. I wrecked it so many times, in so many ways...it's hard to remember. Every time it broke, it was $3-4K to fix-but it had lots of mods. Fully adj coil overs-Koni externally adj strut inserts at all four corners, exhauxt, head, cam, ECU, work...it was a hoot. I really never should have sold it, considering what I eventually got for it.
Anyway, it'll be a long time till I eclipse those memories with my latest Pcar...if ever. There just isn't the club motorsport events-local SCCA, etc there used to be 20 years ago around here.

Added OEM Sport Suspension and H-Sport Sway Bars. She doesn't handle anything like the 993, but she gets around OK for a big girl.
Still love her after 7 years-I sense she is jealous of her new garage mate however...

Gateway for me was a 79 SC. Owner before me was an idiot and wrecked the rear quarter while DUI. Judge ordered him to sell it, guess this wasn't his first time. Anyway, picked it up for a good price and in the process of tearing it apart for the new quarter came to appreciate how well it was designed and put together. Have had a pcar ever since. Funny thing is though the day I saw the ad for the 911, we were heading out to buy a Pontiac and the 911 was listed alphabetically in the paper just beneath it. Serendipity strikes.

My first car was an '87 Dodge Caravan with woodwork. Ah, what a chick repellent that one was! Luckily, dad told me at age 10 that I would have to buy my first car - so I started saving. Mom let me drive her minivan at age 16, but at age 18 - I "upgraded" to a 79 SC Targa. I've had a Porsche in the garage ever since... Never owned an Audi, but have enjoyed Mini Coopers and BMWs.
