Porsche 993 Factory Cup II Wheels--a thing of beauty?
#61
My NB car was optioned with 18" Tech wheels out of the factory, but somewhere between then and when I got it the 18" wheels were replaced with some poorly treated Cup IIs. I have my suspicions that the dealer sold them off and made some money before putting some old Cups on it. I like the look of the Cups, but badly want to return her to original with the Tech wheels. I am actually quite a big fan of twists, though they get a lot of flack from some people.

The dealer did the same thing with my car... took the technology wheels and put on cup II. I'm trying to find a set of originals, but I really love the look of the cup II and will be keeping them!

I like the CUP IIs too, but mine have some curb damage that is probably beyond refurbishing. Ideally, I will get some Techs again someday and keep the Cups for winter/fun use.

I never could land on a set of alternate wheels I liked. So, I had mine refinished in Hyper Silver a couple of years ago. Subtle change, but often gets noticed.

Cup II are WEAK!!! I had to replace two rear wheels due to crack in them. I think Porsche recommended the silly 44PSI in the rear to prevent this. I ran mine lower at 36, and had 2 cracked rear wheels. They both cracked at the barrel lip where it meets the tire. Looking at the cracked wheel, I can see other cracks starting to form.

Bringing this thread back from the grave. I am about to get my CUP IIs refinished and I am considering a change to the modern platinum satin metallic but love the look of the stockers as well as Ed's hyper silver. Does anyone else have CUP IIs refinished in a non-stock color?

No, they aren't weak. Any wheel can experience fatigue and crack. Even early Fuchs, forged and respected as one of the best wheels ever made, have been showing deterioration and cracking for many years. That's one of the reasons why there are new replacements being made today, along with the need for larger diameters for tire choices.

In regards to factory recommended tire pressure, I believe the 17" Cup IIs and their accompanying tires were 36psi front and rear. The 44psi was for rear tires on cars optioned with 18" wheels (still 36 front).

I just went the other way, or at least will as soon as I get around to have the TT's I bought balanced and installed at the cars next yearly service in a couple of weeks.
I never cared for the look of Cup II's much. I'll keep them in case I want to go back to stock at some stage but I'm looking forward to them not being on the car.

I had a crack in a 17x9 Cup II on my 968 back in the day. Bought a replacement from Wheel Enhancement or somebody and I remember them commenting to me that particular size was prone to cracking.
Currently don't have any for my car, but probably will pick up another set when I see a good price.

I personally love the design of CUP IIs and the only other wheel I would consider is BBS LM and those aren't in the budget or timeline right now. Narrowed color down to the standard silver (61M) or the steel grey from the GT2 (61W)

I love the Cup II wheels on the 993 in fact when I owned my silver one I sourced a pair of factory 8x17s for the fronts and matched to my 9x17 rears allowed a very aggressive stance and ran 245 fronts and 275 rears, when I sold car but original 7x17s back on car as agreed in negotiations with the buyer. Someday will own another 993 and back on they go
