So your mechanic is working on a GT3 Cup but he doesn't know that a single-mass flywheel makes a rattling noise at idle....hmm...

Probably my fault, I never thought to mention it...didn't know it would make a difference. I'm new to 993's and this one came with the lightweight flywheel. In fact if I had of had the installation done myself and then heard the rattle AFTER, I would have questioned it...and if the shop had of said 'they all do that', I might have been quite suspicious :-).

Anyway, just glad this forum is here to share information like the above, sure saved me a lot of potentially unnecessary work!

When I purchased mine and received it, I had a panicked call to the PO...I had no idea it would sound so much like a rock was running around in there.

I would replace the rear deck shocks. Much easier with engine out.

Actually it was Stephane after returning from a test drive following the service on the car..he told AG and I that there was a noise from the transmission and it sounded like the bearings. I agreed there was a noise ( sometimes ) with the trans in neutral and the clutch engaged...so AG said we should have a look at it to be safe. At the time it sounded like a good idea, hate to spend the driving season, short as it is, worrying about the tranny seizing!
After Andreas's and other's comments I am more relaxed about the whole thing!

Took the 1st 'slippery slope' step at Andre's...bought a set of the 'new version' Sparco narrow belt ( fits the helmet restraint system...) 6 point harness. Now I just need some type of harness bar and an 'appropriate' seat :-).

Andreas, what exactly causes the rattling sound...the gears?

My understanding is that the heavy, rubber-damped stock flywheel absorbs most of the low-frequency 'power pulses' of the engine while at idle.

Without this dampener in place, the gear cluster will clatter in response to the varied pulses from the engine's crankshaft.

Personally, I find the noise quite annoying. I've listened to 3 or 4 993s so equipped.

That is what I was thinking, but I don't know if its due to not having the DMF installed; my other cars with regular flywheels are silent. Other flat-sixes with regular flywheels are silent. Not a concern of mine; just curious.

I wouldn't put up with it myself on a street car. I've heard dry multi-disc clutches used in Ducati motorcycles...sounds terrible.

Some nice Pole Positions for sale. Then all you need is a harness bar.

Jim,

I have no issue with you posting our invoice but I think consideration should be given about my clients personal information. Please delete the associated post, black-out all of my clients personal data on the invoice and then repost it as you see fit.

Thank you in advance,
Tony Callas
