I will confess to being interested in a 996 because of the recent drop in prices. Prices have dropped so much I started looking at 2005/2006 997's and then decided I loved my 993 and needed to let go of notion a newer car was a better car. I set up some Ebay notifications and received this a week or two ago. I would never consider this car, but for a cab with 122,000 miles I was stunned the most they could get for it was 13,800 which was this guy's buy it now price. I've paid more for motorcycles! I'm shocked!

I'm not shocked. An absolutely unloved and unwanted car, unfortunately. Only Boxster is a better deal than that - can be had for under $10K. both make pretty good cheap autocross or track cars if you ask me.
The particular cab you point to, however... blech. A no-options automatic cab wit holes in teh roof, weird aftermarket chrome wheels and 122K miles... No.

How many DIY M96 rebuild threads have there been, or will there ever be?
I'd absolutely be all over them if there were an endless supply of donor engines/parts like there were for the 2.7s when they hit this same wall in the '80s.

You nailed it, these cars are disposable opposed to serviceable.

Given that it was a new engine, you have to give it time for them to break en masse for people to want to bother rebuilding, especially with the cheap crate engines.

Anyway, what DOES a factory reman engine go for currently?
(Oh, and the single "crate" engine I had the pleasure of tearing down from the air cooled era was a 2.4T that had a crank ground .020/.020. Even little ol' me wouldn't put anything but a std/std crank in an engine. Nitriding? What nitriding? And yeah, maybe the factory did re-nitride. But I still have never had any of the true experts over the years confirm.)
