In time Panameras will be headed down the same road as the 996 their only saving grace being that they have a lot of space and that will always appeal to some who want the Porsche badge and can afford the maintenance - but as far I looks go the cab driver said it best when he saw a black one in NYC "There must be a funeral procession ahead"

We've been way beyond what the 996 Turbo offers since long before there was a GT1, or anyone really noted Metzger for anything but the all-conquering 917 engine. First 935 engine I had my hands on (as in touched, not worked on, at a PCA tech session) would have been 1980. Ol' two-valve, air cooled one of those probably has a higher output just off idle than all but the most developed four-valve water cooleds.
As were 924s, 944s, 928s, and more recently Cayennes. Would be funny to see what a CIS 2.7L era 911 would really be worth if we didn't take over probably half of the production and make them into slope noses, widebodies, donor carcasses for race cars, etc. starting in the early '80s.

Clearly I disagree, and I'm trying to poke fun--not hate--but take it any way you feel good about.
Porsche made a decision on the 996 for $$ reasons and departed dramatically from the iconic styling we all know and has become a tradition...and they heard about it. 996s suffer from a number of maladies, as do 993s, and the market decides which are worse.

As an owner of a 92 964Euro Cup (22km), 95 968 Cab (47K miles), 97 993 Targa (24k miles) and an 01 996 Turbo (5776 miles), I have read these depreciation threads in the various forums over the years.
All of the modern Porsches (those produced while Dr. Weideking was running Porsche (into the ground)), have suffered depreciation similar to all mass produced commodity cars.
Of course, depreciation is an abstract concept if you plan on keeping a car for a very long time.
Over time, these cars are very unlikely to have value similar to "hand built" Porsches. That having been said, I like all of these cars for very different reasons.
BTW, if the headlights were worthy enough to win LeMans on the GT1, they can't be all that bad.

My 996 aero, with those so called "ugly" headlights, sold within 24 hrs of posting on Rennlist FS at the asking price. I liked it better than a regular 993 C2 but that is just a personal preference. Did not have to pony up an Autotrader listing.
Regular 993 C2 were asking about $7-$8K higher than my 996 aero back in '07 for a comparable shape and mileage. It is the same difference today with my car at 100k miles with another 100K mile 993 so I don't get it. Maintenance cost is cheaper on the 996 as well.

The good news is that the 997 will follow the same curve. I, for one, will be buying a 997 GT3 when the pricing hits the $50K mark as all the rich guys trade in for the 991 GT3s in a couple of years.

997.2s will be an excellent DD in about 7 years for the money although the economic recession during the past few years have reduced production relative to 997.1s. I am sure there will be many threads ignoring this fact as well.

Great turbo. The 996tt is always a good option and I think the price on those has settled down. You can always do a headlight conversion.

yup the 997 prices are going to drop precipitously ............ im liking the headlights of the 991 a lot. maybe i can see about doing a headlight conversion. hmmmmmmm im sure it'll be 5-10k to do it right. it's only money. anyway here's a pic of inside. and the ac blows as cold as any lexus.
