Without air you die in 4 minutes or less without water you can live 3 days or more therefore air is more important than water, case closed!

ok, Im a dumbass.

Oops, was typing too fast. I have had 2 996's. I have had 3 993's. The first 996 was a boring silver low option car. Hated it. I attributed that to the car and then bought another one. This one had full aero kit, 19" champion wheels, suspension, exhaust, full carbon fiber int option etc. It wasnt much better. Drove nice and looked ok but it just didnt feel like a sports car, let alone a porsche. Sold it and went back to a 993. I can say that from this point on I will always have a 993.

Sometimes the air-cooled generation may not be what your looking for in terms of driving expectations vs say a water-cooled. They have a completely different driving feel, just really depends what is for you.

Yeah, this is true...........some people really love their Kia's

I had a friend with one once. Thinking it was a fluke, I kept ties with him, but when he bought another one, I knew it was over between us.

......I kid, of course.

Sorta.

I gave my young daughter a 1:18 UT model of a yellow 996 cab for her Polly Pocket dolls to take a ride. It was her favourite colour and it had never been out of the box. She did not look that impressed and told me latter that she really wanted the silver one (993).
Seems like it applies to models also.

I see that we are serving up 993 Kool-Aid again, and again, and again.

well this thread went pretty much as expected.

To the OP: DRIVE THEM. Drive a 993, drive a torsion bar 911, drive the 964, drive the 996, and drive the 997. Sometimes when you drive your childhood dream cars, you end up being disappointed.

Both the 993 and the 996 have their strong points and their weak points. Some people think the 993 is goofy looking and the 996 looks great and vice versa. They didn't sell many thousands of 996s because they are a god awful hideous car.

I don't love the interior or headlights of the cars either (particularly the early cars), but a later model c4s with a full leather interior is really a very nice car.

As for the durability or reliability concerns, both are really quite expensive to repair, and both can cost you $6k+ at the drop of a hat. If you get a 996, get an IMS bearing replaced with a quality aftermarket part.

Once you drive them all, you may realize that an aircooled 911 isn't for you. The specialness that you read about above is, to me, way overblown.

Best of luck in your decision.

According to a Book I read, the 993 was mostly hand built and the pinnacle of 30 years of R & D. The 996 is mostly machine made and was much cheaper to produce. If you remember back in the early 90's, Porsche was almost Bankrupt and going out of business. They needed a cheaper more efficient car to make for the future and to stabilize the company. This was the new generation 996.

there is a lot of drama over this. From what I've read, the 964 was the last of the handbuilt cars, where as the 993 was more "machine made" if you will. The 993 was the beginning of the japanese manufacturing techniques that resulted in a lower MSRP.

Then again, does it really matter? The obsession with handmade goes overboard to me. Machines do a hell of a fine job assembling things.

Cars like the boxster and the cayenne are really what saved porsche.

You maybe correct. But not according to Jack Criswell. His book is The Ultimate Owners Guide- Porsche 911 (993). He also says how each 993 took over 100 man hours to build. The 996 much less.

Quick Reply: Why does the 996 seem to be cheaper than the 993?
