Default What makes g50/3x trans so expensive

Revealed
left, 3/4 shift fork $562.64 std flimsy aluminum version not shown. Upper, steel syncros x4 $275.65. Bottom, std brass for comparison


Unfortunately even steel wears out

Wow!!! I can't believe the prices. Why not make the synchros out of steel in the first place? Is brass that much cheaper to manufacture than steel?

Are you having yours rebuilt? Of course, not only are they expensive but hard to find...

Its not about price; brass ones shift easier and that's a concern for street cars. Its why all OEM ones are brass,....

Yes, there was a couple K worth of worn parts, like the shift fork, dogteeth and syncros, fortunately most every thing was in good shape. The thing that got me was the worn release bearing guide.

After talking to guys that track the /2x where plastic bearing cages melt scattering bits and pieces through the trans and tensioning plates warp/break I feel lucky

I'm guessing because brass is softer, yeah?

I'd love to feel how a car with steel synchs shifts.

I've worked in different types of manufacturing and it amazes me on what the retail prices are for some of the parts. It has to be that Porsche outsources all of this and buys in very low volumes or has a huge mark up. I worked at Gravely tractor and we made all of the gears for the differentials and transmissions starting with blanks. It would take less than a minute to hob out a gear and make hundreds a shift. It's just amazing.

Bill, do you have photos of the matching wear surfaces on the gears? Curious what wear results from a steel (vs. brass) syncro ring. Also, what wear on the shift fork makes this part 'worn out'? Difficult to see in the picture, unless I'm missing something obvious.

No, the wear can be seen on the 3 polished faces of the fork pictured above, it took a lot of track time to get it to that point

How many miles did you get out of them? What is the ratio of street/track miles?

It came from a '95 Cup car and had strictly track mileage the previous usage is unknown, Some but not most of the internals were refreshed a couple of years before I bought it and I've put 50 days and 5500 track mi on it. Obviously not the shift fork. or a couple other of the wear items.

From the reports that I've gotten the /2x will need a rebuild when extensively tracked way before these will due to the plastic bearing cages that melt.

Ask me about the shiftfork. I broke it 1.5 years ago in my custom gearbox that still used the brass version and was fortunate that no additional damage occused to my $$$ RS gears. I replaced the shiftfork for 1/2 and 3/4 (which broke) with a proper version for a car that sees the track. In addition I threw in some steel syncros "while in". At this time I was lucky and paid only $ 140 for one ring.
