Default How do you cut open the oil filter for examination?

Hi all.

How do you go about cutting the oil filters to open it up? I cut the outer housing, but don't know how to proceed to cut the inner stuff to open up the paper filter elements.

Below is as far as I got. What's the next step?

thanks,
anthony

Are you having your oil analyzed, too? This will answer what your eyes can't see.

Uh-oh!! Are you thinking you might find some copper in those filters? I found copper in mine and car is now sitting and waiting for me to save my money for a engine rebuild. Hope you find nothing!

Take a look at the photo on pg. 130 in the current (April 2012) issue of Excellence. It may help.

No more cutting req'd ...simply pry open the exposed pleats with your fingers and look in the crevices: oil flows from outside to inside, so nothing to be found on the inside.

Use an exhaust tubing cutter. You just continually tighten it while turning. It creates no filings.
