I caught an episode of Vinsetta garage on Velocity HD. Since he has probably driven every car under the sun, Mark Vaughn from Auto Week Magazine was asked what his favorite car to drive was.

His Response: "An air cooled 993".

And yet on 11/9/11, he stated this in an Autoweek write-up of the new 911,

"Drive one of these and then go drive that 993/964/whatever and see whether the new car doesn't do everything better than the car you hold in memory as being best."

Hmm. I'll take one of each.

My 997 C2S did everything better than my 993 but it still wasn't near as much fun to drive. I also think the 993 is better looking both inside and out.

I think that is the key - the better car is not the favorite car.

I do find it remarkable how much I enjoy diving my 993 even though it is a 15 year old car.

Over on the Racing Forum there was chatter about some C&D test on the Panamera Turbo lapping faster on the full 4.1 mile VIR course v. an '07 GT3. Uh, yeah maybe. That mean it's your pick for a track rat? 993/964 are at a great price point for all around sports car enjoyment and real world daily use flexibility.

In one case he was asked "what his favourite car to drive was"...that does not mean its the best or that it does everything better.

But as I've always said about magazine write-ups...they have to write something which is why I don't put much stock in them.

Agree but sometimes the best is what you enjoy the most, not ness how newer technology or perf numbers translate. Yes they are fast and are more efficient but a lot of newer cars have become antiseptic and lack that emotive quality that make driving at any speed fun.

Indeed. In fact, my lightened '86 Carrera is more fun to drive than my 993.

To me, the ultimate fun is a '71 911S. So light and nimble.

The least fun 911 I've ever owned was my 2007 C2S.

Yes. After driving a healthy mix of 997.2 variants at last summer's Porsche roadshow, I was only too happy to get back into my glove-tight fitting 993 for the ride home.


...that Boxster Spyder, now, that was another story. That car rocked! Even bested the Cayman R that day, in my opinion.

though the GT3 is pretty "raw", reminiscent of earlier cars. I like it a lot. Really great car
but the "glove-tight" fit of the 993 you mentioned... Is not there
