Aren't these supposed to be the last of the new manual sets or something? I heard Pelican bought out the last of Porsche's inventory..they show 28 in stock right now.

I bought a set about a year ago. They certainly beat the free downloadable version that is floating around on the web.

Is the content different or is it just the convenience of having a physical copy?

Both and more.

The electrical diagrams on the free download off the web are hard to work with. The manuals also have more than one version of electrical diagrams.

The quality is better.

Travis, for every new car or motorcycle I've bought, I always bought the factory shop manual shortly after my purchase.

They're more of a reference that I can quickly turn to and the dollars paid are saved countless times over within a couple of hours of labor not paid to a dealer or independent.

Oh no, I agree! It's usually the first thing I get as well, but I briefly thought I dodged a $400 bullet when I saw it could be downloaded.

Well the soft copy is certainly better than nothing. I just thought an 8-volume set for that price was reasonable. If an owner isn't prepared to do most if not all of their own wrenching, then the soft copy should do.

I bought a set too a couple of years ago. Haven't used them as much as Alex, but have found them helpful.

I used mine quite a bit. The downloaded version (at least the photocopied and put on pdf version I have) is not adequate for my use...especially the electrical stuff. Is there an official pdf version?

I've never seen one listed.

I wanted to scan my 993 Owners Manual and save it to PDF for those not able to buy one, but haven't made the time to do so yet.

BTW, I also downloaded the Porsche Repair Manual from a German 993 site. The quality was much better, in fact, near perfect; pages were bright, straight, no scan through. You do need to be able to read and understand German though.

I use both. Its nice to be able to print out disposable pages when working in the shop, rather then getting tons of grease/oil/crap on my good set.

I would say the only advantage of the paper copies is the wiring diagrams, because whomever scanned the document did not have a large format scanner.

I have the paper copy because one of the guys I did work for very generously gave me a set. Otherwise I would not bother dropping the money on a paper set, just work in softcopy. I try to keep my contributions to Porsche as low as possible ; they already get enough of my money!

Just to give you an idea, I did the entire engine rebuild from the soft copy, got the hard copy after the rebuild. I do not see what is the issue other then the wiring diagrams? Its exactly the same manual.

Cheers

Mike
