Default Engine Pan or Not?

I currently have the engine out of the car getting a top-end rebuild done. While it is out, I am making some small changes. What are your thoughts on running without that engine pan that is there to catch oil? I don't really want it on there - thinking it may lead to more heat around the engine. The car will not be driven in bad weather.

Most folks here don't run with it on.

This is one of the most asked questions on this board, right along with "What type of oil should I use?" Do a search on "engine tray" (search titles only) on the 993 board, and you will find your answers.

As Bob said, most run with it off. Mine is off.

I tried mine on and off. Contrary to most, I put mine back on. I didn't notice any difference in heat, but I had an annoying "drone" while driving on the highway with it off. Could be a cab thing.

Haha this old chestnut again.

I run with for what thats worth if for no other reason than to provide some protection for the low hanging bits that are susceptible to damage on my lowered 993.

Leave it off or you'll be burned at the stake.

Seriously, I haven't seen any data either way other than the engine runs cooler without having taken any measurments. Like a lot of things on the internet, advice gets passed on without any basis.

Anyone in the no-pan camp want to free up some space in their garage? Being a 4-seasons car, I'd like to have one..I check eBay, etc. occasionally but haven't seen one yet.

Funny, I tossed three of the #$)$*# things in the garbage a while ago. I have guys come into the shop, remove the tray during servicing, and leave the tray for pickup later - never to be picked up. Was sick of it, so when I was taking a lot to the dump, in they went. Was actually quite pleasurable to see how far I could throw them into the trash heap.

Travis, if you could wait for a while, and I bet i will have a free one... although most of the guys that deal with me have been 'stripped'. :-)

Cheers,

Mike

Hahaha well, one man's trash, et al. But the toboggan thing would have been handy this past week!

Anyway I've got patience, and I like Vancouver, so maybe...just maybe...we can work something out!
