OK, so he'll out-do Motec, Bosch, & et al, given all their development capacity
and other resources. Got it!

Before all this hype, it might be appropriate to inform members of some of his
actual completed electronic automotive developments, e.g. write-ups, pictures,
installs, & etc. It's one thing to easily develop and produce a simple circuit to
fool the 993 SAI system for OBDII monitors, and another to develop, fully test
under all operating conditions, package, and then market a highly reliable ECM.

Bottom line: An ECM development & production is not now made very simple,
i.e. requiring less resources, in 2012 versus the late '80s (Bosch 993 development),
because we now have quad core and dual core RISC microprocessors as is the
implication of some posts. The microprocessor used the 993 DME 20 years ago
is more than adequate for any ECM design requirement today.
Loren, you have point but it is hidden under all that trash talk you allways write here. Come on man..."out do motec, motronic etc." whered did I say that? You are out of line and talking out of you a$$.
You clearly possess a great amount of information about our cars and it would be great if you contributed to this thread/issue, but please try be more constructive.

I can share a little background on this later on and you'll get your answers as well.

He is using a tested&tried processor that comes with it's own software. 90% of the engineering you are talking about lies there.
The rest is what my friend is doing, designing the power and signal boards and making it work on a specific car/engine and making it 100% plug and play.

I'm interested, but would like to see the dyno and how it works in real would driving. Things like stop and go traffic on a 100 degree F day. But the ability to tune the system sounds great.

Jussi, you know I'm interested! I'll give you a call ( I tried but I might have a wrong number).

As you know mine's 95 but we can easily figure out the back and forth (I think Macke is coming here fr seatrade etc.) and I'll alsi be in Finland for summer.

That is all up to the person who is doing the mapping. You can pay for a pro to do it or you can do it yourself. That's the beauty of this.

Petu perkele! We will make you a 55-pin prototype! Seatrade is March, I think we'll be able to send you the proto before that.
I'll give you a call tomorrow!

I'll commit to buying one for my 95'. Thanks Juha G for potentially giving this a try!

Ok, here’s two quick shots of the unfinished prototype ECU. It is still missing quite a few components (including the processor) but they should be in this week.

On the left is the power driver board (including the 993 88-pin adapter board) and on the right is the signal board.
In the lower photo the boards are connected together.

If everything goes well, we could be doing the first tests already this weekend on my 993.

I’ll keep you posted!

I don't think this is that exceptional; there are a few well-developed ECUs that can be made into a 993 plug & play in the low $1000 range. ECUs that are developed, sorted and will run the 993 functions 100% stock. We've done several similar systems over the years and they work well.

The 993 can benefit from a host of electronics upgrades that go beyond the ECU. Most of my 964/993 engine management customers want the ability to do coil on plug, different sensor packages and add sensors such as fuel pressure for data logging. In these cases, a plug & play isn't always the best choice.

Kind Regards,

Neel

Hi Neil,

I agree with you that this is nothing exceptional. However, there is no ECU on market that you can just plug in into a 1996 993. Not a $1000 ECU nor a $10000 ECU...
On the other hand, you can make an adaptor harness for any ECU and make it plug and play.

This ECU you can just plug in and start tuning. I have two BMW's with the older generation ECU's made by my friend. They work flawlessly. The porsche engine is no different from a BMW six cylinder engine when it comes to engine management. Just different hardware and programming.

Coil on plug is no problem. The ECU can manage sequential ignition and sequential injection. Of course for that you need to run additional wiring but that is the case with any aftermarket ECU.

Let's all calm down until we have tested the prototype on my car.

Interesting Juha. Will this ECU do knock control? Also will it also do ramp up/down on the various tables?
