Noisy Spoiler Lube
Hi guys...after checking all of the posts on fixing a noisy spoiler, I have a couple of questions. What type of grease to use on the worm gear (that won't deteriorate the plastic housing-will spray lithium grease be sufficient?), and how do you lube the cable? Mine has unwound somewhat at each end to keep it in the cable housing. Speaking of the cable housing, any suggestions to replace the coating on it? I would assume moisture can get to the cable if the coating is gone as mine is.
Thanks in advance.

The type you want to get is very rubbery and has a shrink ratio of 4:1. Cut all the old sheathing off first and make sure you extend the new sheathing to the ends as much as possible.

Thanks Alex...an excellent suggestion. Hi Ed...I am in the middle of replacing the bearing (a very easy DIY), but looking for suggestions for lube for inside the plastic gear housing.

Available at most motorcycle shops.

If you are referring to the sheathing on the spiral would cable casing, you can replace it with quality heat shrink.

Maybe someone can chime in on what the different types are made of.

the fix worked great. No coffee grinder from the spoiler. However, after a couple of days, the cable in the housing broke at the motor connection. Does anyone know if that cable can be replaced, or am I doomed to buying the entire mechanism (or maybe say the hell with it and get a duck tail:-)

IIRC, the spoiler motor and cable (and possibly the motor) are one part from Porsche. Now that you've seen them apart you know they really are two separate pieces held together by the bond at the transmission case.
If you price that part at the dealer it's expensive. First thing I'd consider is fabricating a replacement cable.

You might try finding a speedometer cable that has the right sized end (usually square), then cutting it to length and modifying the cut end as required. The diameter of the cable would have to be the same to handle the torque.
